Dieterich, St. Anthony to Meet for Girls Regional Championship

The Dieterich Lady Maroons and the St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs will tangle tonight for the championship of the Neoga 1A Regional.

Dieterich advanced to the title game with a 59-37 victory over Palestine-Hutsonville, while St. Anthony moved on after a 34-17 win over host school Neoga.  Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. 

The championship game will begin at 7:30pm and will be heard at the same spot on the radio and the Web.  The winner will advance to the Altamont 1A Sectional Monday night at 8:00 against the CHBC/Altamont winner at South Central tonight.

DIETERICH 59, PALESTINE/HUTSONVILLE 37

The Lady Maroons moved out to an early lead and were in front 18-7 after one quarter.  Dieterich then outscored the Lady Pioneers 33-20 over the middle two quarters to lead the contest 51-27 before Palestine outscored Dieterich 10-8 in the final period.

Dieterich made 40% of its shots, 26 of 65 and made all five of its foul shots.  The Maroons turned the ball over just nine times and pulled down 37 rebounds while making two of 14 three-point shots.

Dieterich held Palestine to 32% shooting and forced 21 turnovers.

Dieterich had four players in double figures, Candace Niemerg with 18 points as well as double digits in rebounds, Mallorie Vahling with 11 points, and Katilyn Meinhart and Sydney Higgs each with 10 points.  Courtney Flach scored eight points and Rachel Schmidt rang up two points.

Nicole Kiger led Palestine with 22 points.

Palestine/Hutsonville finished the season at .500, 14-14.  Dieterich improved to 17-11 on the season.

ST. ANTHONY 34, NEOGA 17

Neither team shot well in this game, but the Lady Bulldogs held a big edge on the boards and outscored Neoga 11-2 at the foul line.

It was a 4-4 game after one quarter, but St. Anthony got their offensive legs for most of the rest of the game.  The Bulldogs outscored the Indians 12-2 in the second quarter to lead 16-6 at halftime and outpointed Neoga 11-3 in the third quarter to lead 27-9.  Neoga did outscore St. Anthony 8-7 in the fourth quarter.

St. Anthony made just 10 of 34 shots for 29%, while Neoga made just seven of 44 shots for 14%.  St. Anthony was 11 of 17 from the line while Neoga was two of six.  Each team committed 16 turnovers, but St. Anthony outrebounded Neoga 33-19.  The Bulldogs made three of five three-point tries, while Neoga made just two of 12 shots.

Megan Nuxoll had a big game for St. Anthony.  The sophomore scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.  Makayla Walsh scored nine points and did a good defensive job on Neoga's E.C. Thies.  Kate Richards scored eight points, Lexie Niebrugge scored four points, and Hunter Niebrugge made a foul shot.

Madison Butler scored 11 of Neoga's 17 points, while Jillian Deters scored three points, Olivia Ott two points, and Stephanie Roderick one point.

Neoga sees their season with a 9-19 record, and says goodbye to seniors Kristin Deters and Stephanie Roderick. 

St. Anthony improved to 19-10 and Bart Wiedman's crew can tie the St. Anthony record for wins by a girls varsity team with a victory tonight.

CLASS 1A EDWARDS COUNTY (ALBION) REGIONAL

North Clay (Louisville) and Red Hill (Bridgeport) will meet for the championship of the Edwards County Regional after picking up victories Wednesday evening.

In the opening game, Red Hill bounced Cisne to the tune of 38-15. The second contest went to North Clay over Noble 58-42.

North Clay and Red Hill square off at 7:30 p.m. today for the regional title.
