The score was close for a while but Teutopolis High School edged away in the second period then went on a hot scoring streak in the second half to put the game on ice in winning the Class 2A Effingham St. Anthony Boys Basketball Regional over the host Bulldogs Friday evening.

The first half was a defensive effort by both teams. T-town edged ahead 9-6 in the first quarter then had a 15-10 second period run to lead 24-16 at halftime. Dawson Smith nailed three of four baskets for seven points by half while Clint Weber led the way for the Shoes with eight.

"Both teams played really good defense in the first half," said T-town Coach Chester Reeder. "The first half was a grind-it-out half. We were fortunate we made a couple of shots to take the eight point lead at halftime."

The third period was a telling quarter as the Shoes knocked in five of five from the field, including two of three from three-point range for a 12-5 run and a 36-21 lead going into the final period.

T-town kept the momentum scoring-wise, hitting five of five from the field and 12 of 15 from the free throw line for a 22-12 final period run.

"I'm so proud of these kids," said Reeder. "I'm not used to this and I'm over the moon. People asked if I was nervous and I told them I wasn't because I had a lot of confidence in these boys. It's a great night for T-town."

Smith finished with 22 points, connecting on six of seven from the field and nine of 12 at the line. Weber chipped in with 15 points on seven of 10 from the field and one of two at the line. The Wooden Shoes had a 21-10 rebounding edge as Evan Wermert, Weber and Charlie Hoene had four each.

Coach Cody Rincker's squad was led by Dust with 17 points on eight of 14 from the field and one of two at the line. Luke Ludwig led in rebounds with three. The Bulldogs end the season with a 20-11 record.

Jaccob Dust was St. Anthony's stalwart player in the first half scoring 11 of the Bulldogs total of 16.

T-town now advances to the Vandalia Sectional Wednesday and will face Mount Carmel, a 53-36 winner over Red Hill (Bridgeport) to claim its own regional. Tuesday's game will feature Fairfield, a 70-56 winner over Carmi-White County in the Harrisburg Regional against Pana, a 72-71 winner over Marshall in the Shelbyville Regional.

There will not be pre-sale of sectional tickets at Vandalia. Vandaila will sell all general admission tickets the night of the game. Doors will open one hour prior to game time.
