The Effingham Hearts broke open a close, low-scoring game, pouring in 49 points over the middle two quarters, on the way to a 73-55 win over the Mattoon Green Wave in Apollo Conference action at EHS Gym.
In the process, Landon Wolfe scored 35 points for Effingham to climb past the 2,000-point mark in career scoring.
Effingham led 8-6 after one quarter, with Wolfe scoring all eight of the Effingham points. It was a different story in the second quarter, as Effingham tallied 28 points to 17 for the Green Wave to lead 36-23 at halftime. A 21-13 third quarter edge put the Hearts up 57-36 heading for the final quarter. Mattoon outpointed Effingham 19-16 in the fourth period to pull within 18 points at the final buzzer.
Landon Wolfe's 35 points leaves him with 2,016 points. That's 30 points shy of the all-time boys basketball scoring record of 2,046 set by Mitch Arnold from 1977 to 1980. It leaves Landon as one of three Effingham High School basketball players to score 2,000 points.
The all-time scoring mark was set by Blair Hardiek, who scored 2,540 points for the Lady Hearts from 1999 to 2003.
In addition to Landon Wolfe's 35-point output, Drew Thompson scored 13 points, 11 in the second quarter, Parker Wolfe scored 12 points, and Nate Thompson scored 11 points. Tate Niebrugge scored the other two Effingham points.
Jacob Spitz led Mattoon with 22 points, while Jaydon Noe scored 16 points and Jadyn Princko scored 10.
Effingham's next contest is Tuesday night at EHS against Breese Mater Dei, before wrapping up the regular season with a conference game against Taylorville.
Mattoon won the JV game 78-73. Ben Donsbach scored 21 points, Jacob Briggerman 20 and Tate Niebrugge 12 to lead the JV Hearts.
