It was a batlte between two National Trail Conference teams and Effingham St. Anthony High School pulled out the victory over North Clay (Louisville) in girls basketball action Monday evening,, 58-54.

The Cardinals took the opening quarter lead 17-13 behind six points by Cassidy Coble. But the Bulldogs got untracked and went on a 19-10 second period scoring run to lead 32-27 at halftime. Clare McHugh kept the Bulldogs in the game in the first quarter with seven points and continued her run with seven more in the second period. Sydney Gibson who didn't score in the opening period, produced eight points.

North Clay came back with a 15-12 third quarter to pull within 44-42 going into the final period. Mallory Craig scored eight points for the Cardinals.

Then it was a 14-12 final period for the Bulldogs to finish with the win. McHugh scored eight more and finished with 28 to lead all scorers in the game. Meg Richards chipped in with 12 and Gibson finished with 10. McHugh had three steals while Richards and Abby Repking pulled down eight rebounds each. Riley Guy had three assists.

"We played well enought o get a win on the road with two players in our normal rotatin absent," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We had to play vrey deliberate down the stretch because we were out of gas.

"I know we wil step up and have two good days of practice to get ready for Brownstown/St. Elmo. We sill have a chnce to get second in the conferecbne, 20 wins and it's Senior Night Thursday."

The Bulldogs improved to 19-10 overall and are 6-1 in the National Trail Conference.

North Clay's Madison Lovett finished with 16 points to lead the way while Craig and Coble tallied 13 each.

St. Anthony claimed the junior varsity game, 48-10.

 At Effingham

Effingham was a scoring machine Monday evening with a 62-30 victory over Champaign Centennial.

The Hearts ran off to a 36-2 opening quarter. Carsyn Fearday went crazy in that opening quarter, hitting six field goals that included a three-pointer and was two of two at the line. She finished with 15 points that period and went on to lead the Hearts with 19.

Also in double figures for the Hearts was Abby Weis with 11, seven coming in the opening quarter.

The Hearts are now 22-4 on the season. EHS will be back in action Thursday at Mattoon and will finish out regular season play next week with a Monday game at Charleston, Thursday at LIncoln and Saturday hosting Olney.

Altamont High School continues to roll along. The Indians played host to Neoga in National Trail Conference play Monday evening and won 59-28.

Altamont stepped out to a 13-6 opening quarter lead then had a 28-9 second period run to lead 41-15 at halftime.

Allyson Hardiek went on a run in the second period, cranking out five field goals and a free throw for 11 points. She finshed with 17 to lead her team. Also in duble figures was Mary Guse with 12.

Five players scored for Neoga with Olivia Titus, Kylee Phillips and Mary Hill with eight points each.

Altamont finished at 8-0 in the National Trail Conference to capture first place and stands at 24-3 overall.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis High School celebrated Senior NIght with a 60-53 victory over Breese Mater Dei Monday evening.

The wooden Shoes trailed Mater Dei 14-11 after the opening quarter. That's before Lexie Niebrugge caught fire in the second period, knocking in three trifectas and a two-pointer for 11. Sadie Bueker contributed five points after the opening quarter eight points she tallied.

Niebrugge continued her run with seven more in the third quarter and the Shoes held a 42-37 lead going into the final quarter. Niebrugge finished out with seven more points and that was 26 for the contest. She nailed five three-pointers. Also in double figures was S. Bueker with 15.

Morgan Mette had three assits and a blocked shot in the contest. Olivia Niemerg also had a blocked shot.Claire Bushur pulled down five rebounds. Mette had three steals.

The victory was Coach Laurie Thompson's 350th and the Shoes are now 26-4 on the season. T-town will finish out regular season play Friday against Bloomington Central Catholic at Parkland College.

Brownstown/St. Elmo edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 47-43 in National Trail Conference action Monday evening.

CHBC held a 15-13 opening quarter lead and led 28-27 at halftime. BSE came back with a 9-7 third quarter to lead 36-35 going into the final period. BSe then had an 11-8 run to pull out the four point victory.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Natalie Oberlink, a 5-foot-11 junior, led the way with 15. She also had three rebounds and three steals. Claire Wilhour added 12 points, five assists and three steals. Elizabeth Johnson chipped in with 10 points and had four steals.

CHBC was led by Lauren Wojcik with 15 and Jaelyn Robertson with 14. Wojcik had four three-pointers.

At Cowden

 Three players scored in double figures for the Hatchets. Nikki Trussell led the way with 29 points. She connected on 12 field goals and was five of eight at the line. Mikala Nichols tallied 20 on 10 field goals and Megan Schlechte chipped in with 11.

Jenny Robards led Dieterich with 22 points.
