Altamont Nabs NTC Girls Tourney Championship

BEECHER CITY -- Altamont was on a roll at the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament and finished out with the championship Friday evening..

The Indians handed Effingham St. Anthony a 58-45 loss. Taking an 18-14 opening quarter lead, Altamont pushed that to 30-24 at halftime then put the game totally away with a 20-14 final quarter.

Two players hit double figures for the Indians. Mary Guse tallied 17 while Leah Mayhaus chipped in with 10. Guse connected on three trifectas while the other two three-pointers came from Tinley Mette.

St. Anthony was led by Clare McHugh with 13 points and Meg Richards with 12. Sydney Gibson and Richards pulled down five rebounds each. McHugh had five steals. Both of those players were named to the All-Tournament Team.

"It was a great game by two tough-nosed teams that left it out on the floor," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Altamont and Katie always bring out the best in us and it was a great atmosphere."

Third place went Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg over North Clay (Louisville), 60-31.

The Hatchets established the momentum early with a 21-10 opening quarter and led 38-12 at halftime.

Megan Schlechte tallied 19 to lead the winners while Nikki Trussell chipped in with 15 and Hannah Hayes 10.

North Clay was led by Madison Lovett with 11.

In the consolation championship, Neoga won over Brownstown/St. Elmo, 45-39.

The Indians led 23-17 at halftime then had a 17-11 third period run.

Mary Hill scored 19 to lead the winners. Leading BSE was Claire Wilhour with 21.

The seventh place winner was Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Dieterich, 71-64.

CHBC led 34-32 at halftime then had a 20-14 third quarter.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson with 26, Carsen Burks with 12 and Lauren Wojcik with 11.

Dieterich was led by Jenny Robards with 19 and Andrea Bierman with 12.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Altamont's Leah Mayhaus who was also named the Most Valuable Player, Tinley Mette and Mary Guse. St. Anthony's Clare McHugh and Meg Richards, Windsor/Stew-Stras' Megan Schlechte and Hannah Hayes, Neoga's Mary Hill, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City's Jaelyn Robertson, North Clay's Madison Lovett and Brownstown/St. Elmo's Claire Wilhour and Natalie Oberlink.
