(SATURDAY NIGHT'S GAMES AT SALEM HAVE BEEN CALLED OFF. NO RESCHEDULE DATE YET)

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes and the Effingham Hearts now know what games they will play in in the finals of the Salem Invitational Tournament; now the question is when those games will be played.

The winter weather may play havoc with Saturday's schedule at Salem. In the meantime, the Wooden Shoes advanced to the championship game with a 56-45 win over Thornton Fractional North. The Hearts lost to East St. Louis 70-50 to fall into the third place contest. Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The third place game is slated for 5:30pm Saturday, while the championship game is to be played at 8:30pm. The start times, though, could be impacted by the weather. We will keep you up-to-date.

EAST ST. LOUIS 70, EFFINGHAM 50

The Hearts hung around early in this one, trailing just 12-10 after one quarter. The second quarter was huge, though, as the Flyers outscored the Hearts 22-6 and led 34-16 at halftime. The second half was fairly even, with the Flyers outscoring the Hearts 36-34 after intermission, but the damage had been done.

Effingham was down 18 in the third quarter and then went on a run to cut it to 11, but East St. Louis to lead 50-34 heading for the fourth quarter, and then outscored the Hearts 20-16 in the final period.

Landon Wolfe had a double-double for Effingham while going against taller timber, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Parker Wolfe scored 17 points. Also for Effingham: Cole Marxman with six points and 10 rebounds, Nate Thompson four, and Drew Thompson and Cameron Kalber two each.

Four players finished in double figures for East St. Louis, led by Terrence Hargrove with 17 points. Jashawn Anderson, Elijah Rice and Cornellius LeFlore each scored 12 points.

Effingham made 37% of its shots, 21 of 57, including 4 of 18 threes. They made four of just seven foul shots, turned the ball over 17 times and grabbed 33 rebounds.

East St. Louis made 28 of 61 shots for 48% including 9 of 29 threes. They made five of just foul shots, turned the ball over just eight times and pulled down 32 rebounds.

TEUTOPOLIS 56, THORNTON FRACTIONAL NORTH 45

It looked like this was going to an 80-78 game in the first quarter, which finished in a 21-21 tie. Adjustments were made, though, and things changed.

Teutopolis outscored the Meteors 10-5 in the second quarter and led 31-26 at halftime. TF North outpointed the Shoes 11-10 and were within 41-37 after three quarters. The Shoes finally established some breathing room in the fourth period, outscoring the Meteors 15-8 to win by 11.

The Shoes shot 55% from the field, 23 of 42 including 2 of 6 threes. T-Town made eight of 12 foul shots, committed just seven turnovers and grabbed 25 rebounds. TF North made 16 of 45 shots, 36%, including 5 of 14 threes. They made 8 of 13 foul shots, turned the ball over just six times and grabbed 22 rebounds.

Julius Byrd led TF North with 23 points.

If the schedule for Saturday at Salem holds, Troy Triad will play Mt. Vernon at 11:30am and Centralia will take on Salem at 1pm in the consolation bracket semifinals. The winners will play in the consolation championship at 7pm. Again, Effingham will play Thornton Fractional North for third place at 5:30pm, and Teutopolis will take on East St. Louis for the championship at 8:30pm. The Hearts and Shoes games will be aired on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com if the games are played.
