Dieterich, St. A, WSS Win NTC Tourney Openers

BEECHER CITY -- Dieterich, St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed opening round victories at the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Monday.
Dieterich opened with a 53-50 win over South Central. The Movin' Maroons took a 16-13 opening quarter lead and led 28-23 at halftime. The two teams played to a 12-12 third period before the Cougars came back in the final quarter with a 15-13 run only to fall short.
Two players hit double figures for Dieterich. Jenny Robards led the way with 17 and Brooke Locey added 11.
South Central was led by Laney Webster with 12 and Kayli Swift with 11.
St. Anthony then claimed a 49-17 win over Neoga.
The Bulldogs had a 17-13 opening quarter lead then had an 18-2 second period run and that was the game.
Riley Guy tallied 13, Meg Richards 12 and Clare McHugh 11 for the Bulldogs. Richards had six rebounds, Sydney Gibson had two assists and Shea Kinkelaar three steals.
"Meg and Riley had great offensive games in the first half," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Our team "D" was solid all night."
The Bulldogs improved to 16-8 on the season.
Neoga was led by Mary Hill with six.
In the final game of the evening, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 60-52.
WSS edged ahead 16-15 in the opening quarter but CHBC took a 31-30 halftime lead. CHBC still held that one point lead going into the final quarter. The Hatchets got unwound with a 16-7 final period.
Megan Schlechte, a 6-foot senior, led in scoring with 30 points. She hit 10 field goals and was 10 of 13 at the line. Mikala Nichols and Nikki Trussel scored 10 points each.
CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson and Tabitha Endsley with 13 points each.
The tournament continues Wednesday with Brownstown/St. Elmo against North Clay (Louisville) at 5:30, top-seeded Altamont meeting Dieterich at 7 and Neoga facing South Central at 8:30.
