LINCOLN -- Effingham High School picked up an Apollo Conference girls basketball win over Lincoln Thursday, 66-44.

The Hearts took control early and never let up. EHS held a 25-8 opening quarter tally behind three-pointers by Carsyn Fearday and Skyler Schafer and six points by Natalie Carie.

EHS again tallied 25 points, this time in the second quarter for a 50-18 halftime lead. Fearday scored seven points while Schafer connected on two more three-pointers.

Fearday finished with 18 points while Abby Weis scored 17 and Schafer finished with 11. Weis went on a tear in the third quarter, hitting two trifectas and was four of four at the line for 10 points.

The Hearts are now 13-3 on the season.

At Shelbyville

Effingham St. Anthony easily handed Shelbyville a 57-14 non-conference loss in action Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and led 27-11 at halftime. Clare McHugh, a senior guard, had a big game. She connected on 13 points in the opening quarter and had a 16-point third period to finish with 34 points. McHugh connected on 14 field goals and was six of six at the line.

"Clare had an unbelievable game with 34 points on 14 of 20 shots and six of six from the free throw line," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "The majority of those buckets were 10 to 15 foot jump shots.

"What is most pleasing was the 14 points given up. Our defense was really intense and just didn't give up many open looks. We really played this end like a team."

Sydney Gibson and Riley Guy had three assists each. Elizabeth Kabbes had two steals and Meg Richards led in rebounds with five. The Bulldogs are now 13-8 on the season.

At Farina

Altamont ran off to a 20-7 opening quarter lead and went on to bounce South Central, 72-16 in National Trail Conference action Thursday.

The Indians connected on 45 percent from the field and were 68 percent from the line while the Cougars could only connect on 15 percent from the field.

Four players hit the double digit mark for the Indians. JoAnna Schultz led the way with 16 while Rachel Jackman added 12 and Tinley Mette and Mary Guse scored 10 each. Mette led the way in rebounds with nine while Leah Mayhaus added eight. Guse had eight assists. Mayhaus and Alyson Hardiek had four steals each.

The Indians are perfect in the NTC with a 6-0 mark and stand at 17-2 overall. South Central drops to 3-12 on the season.

Altamont claimed the junior varsity game by a 39-8 count.

Oblong claimed a non-conference victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday, 61-55.

Oblong edged out to an 18-16 opening quarter lead and led 33-27 at halftime. Oblong pushed that to 47-36 going into the final quarter. Oblong had 10 three-pointers in the contest led by A. Dart with five trifectas and 24 points.

BSE had two players in double figures. Claire Wilhour, a 5-foot-6 junior, led the way with 33 points. She connected on 12 field goals, four of those from three-point range, and was five of six at the line. Olivia Campbell tallied 13 points.

Lawrenceville pulled out a 45-43 win over Newton in action Thursday.

The Eagles held a 10-7 opening quarter lead and led 17-15 at halftime. Lawrenceville pulled with 28-27 going into the final quarter then had an 18-15 run to pull out the victory.

Newton was led by Brooke Jansen with 17 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two assists. Whitney Zumbahlen had five rebounds and two assists. Allison Harris led in steals with three and assists with four.

Newton drops to 1-3 in the Little Illini Conference, 6-12 overall.

The Eagles claimed the junior varsity contest, 31-27.
