EHS, T-town Win Twice At CHS Girls Tourney

CHARLESTON -- Effingham and Teutopolis both claimed two victories in opening round play at the Charleston Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday.
The Hearts opened with a 51-42 victory over Paris. The Hearts jumped out to a 16-9 opening quarter lead and led 30-21 at halftime. EHS had a 17-14 final period.
Carsyn Fearday tallied 20 for the Hearts while Miranda Fox added 13.
"It was a good win to start the tournament," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Miranda just played a heckuva game. She was everywhere and had a big basket when it got close. Carsyn did a great job of playing around foul trouble. Abby Weis did a great job guarding the Krabel girl. Skyler Schafer did a great job on the boards with 10."
In the second EHS contest, the Hearts pounded Danville 65-35. EHS took a 20-13 opening quarter lead and had a 19-9 third period run.
Weis tallied 14 to lead the Hearts while Taylor Armstrong scored 12 and Fearday 10.
Teutopolis opened with a 52-28 victory over Danville.
The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 17-13 first quarter lead and led 29-21 at halftime. The Shoes then put the game away with a 16-9 third period.
Claire Bushur scored 10 points while Lexie Niebrugge and Olivia Niemerg added eight each.
T-town then bounced Paris, 52-29. The Shoes held a 24-13 halftime lead then had a 28-16 second half.
Niemerg led this time around with 12 points and Savannah Grimes added nine.
In other games Thursday, Charleston defeated Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 78-66, Tri-County downed Pekin 74-51 and won over Sacred Heart-Griffin 63-54 in overtime. Charleston finished out the evening with a win over Pekin 49-19.
Effingham and Teutopolis face each other today. There are four games on tap before semifinals begin at 3 p.m.
