Altamont Claims Two Wins, SA Splits; Neoga Wins One In Girls Tourneys

MATTOON -- Altamont High School picked up two victories while Effingham St. Anthony split in opening round play of the Mattoon Girls Holiday Tournament Thursday.

St. Anthony faced Olney in the first game of the tournament and fell to the Tigers, 64-57. The Bulldogs held the early lead, going out to 20-15 in the opening quarter and leading 31-29 at halftime.

However, Olney came back with an 18-10 third quarter and had a 17-16 final period to pull out the victory.

St. Anthony was led by Clare McHugh with 21 points while Riley Guy added 12 and Meg Richards 10.

The Bulldogs then edged Vandalia 51-47. Vandalia held a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 20-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs had a 32-27 second half for the victory.

McHugh tallied 23 as the lone Bulldog player in double figures.

"We just struggled defensively in both games but offensively we have been playing well," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We are fortunate to put ourselves in a good position with the win against Vandalia to give us some momentum to play Galesburg."

Altamont claimed two victories. The Indians opened with a 55-44 win over host Mattoon.

Altamont took an 18-13 opening quarter lead and led 29-26 at halftime. Altamont then had a 26-18 second half for the winning margin.

Brooke Runge led the Indians with 14 points while Leah Mayhaus chipped in with 10.

 Altamont then pounded Salem, 68-22. No other information was provided.

In other scores, Decatur St. Teresa defeated Salem 51-45, Galesburg downed Vandalia 64-40, Galesburg then took a 54-46 win over Olney and Mattoon downed Decatur St. Teresa 53-41.

Altamont will meet Decatur St. Teresa while St. Anthony takes on Galesburg in morning games. Pool play will be decided by the four morning contests.

Monticello Holiday Hoopla

Neoga split victories in the Monticello Holiday Hoopla Thursday.

Neoga lost the opener against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, 60-50.

GCMS took a 17-8 opening quarter lead but Neoga came back to pull within 29-25 at hafltime. The Indians moved ahead 40-39 going into the final period but GCMS came back with a 21-10 run for the victory.

Kylee Phillips led Neoga with 15 points while Kelsey Partlow, Audrey Ramert and Mary Hill were all on the verge of double figures with nine points each.

Neoga then tallied a 56-36 win over Argenta-Oreana.

The Indians trailed A-O 12-9 after the opening quarter and 23-19 at halftime. Neoga then went on a tear, outscoring Argenta-Oreana 25-8 in the third period and 14-5 in the final period for the 20-point win.

Olivia Titus scored 20 points to lead the way while Phillips added 10.

In other scores, Tuscola beat Argenta-Oreana 54-24, Ridgeview won over Monticello 41-36, Stark County downed Paxton-Buckley-Loda 44-28 and Tuscola beat GCMS 46-42.
