BSE Captures Two Victories at Dieterich Girls Tourney

DIETERICH -- Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed two victories in opening round play at the Dieterich Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

BSE opened with a 42-38 edge over North Clay (Louisville). The Cardinals led 11-6 after the opening quarter and 16-15 at halftime. BSE then came back with a 27-22 second half to pull out the victory.

Claire Wilhour tallied 14 for the winners while Olivia Campbell added nine.

North Clay was led by Madison Lovett with 16 and Cassidy Coble with 10.

BSE then tallied a 65-45 win over Arcola. The Eagles stepped out to a 27-6 opening quarter lead and that was the game.

BSE was led by C. Wilhour with 33 and Campbell with 17. Wilhour connected on 13 field goals, one a three-pointer, and was six of eight at the line.

Casey-Westfield captured a 51-44 win over South Central in game two. The Cougars held a 24-19 halftime lead but Casey-Westfield had a 32-20 second half.

C-W was led by Jae Lynn Riggleman with 15 and Addie Squiares with 14.

South Central was led by Jessica Blomberg with 19 and Kelsey Landreth with 13.

Newton tallied a 61-31 win over South Central in game four. The Eagles led 29-22 at halftime then had an 18-3 third quarter surge.

Eliza Bierman scored 15 and Whitney Zumbahlen 13 for the winners.

South Central was led by Katlyn Hilmes with 10.

North Clay then downed Dieterich 60-32. The Cardinals held a 34-15 halftime lead and then had a 16-7 third quarter run.

Madison Lovett nailed 10 field goals that included five three-pointers and was seven of 10 at the line for 32 points for the Cardinals. Cassidy Coble had nine points.

Dieterich was led by Brooke Locey with eight points.

In the final game of the day, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Newton, 53-49. Newton led 13-11 after the opening quarter and 26-24 at halftime. Newton still held a lead, 37-36 going into the final period. CHBC then came back with 17-12 run to pull out the victory.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson with 24 and Tabitha Endsley with 14.

Newton was led by Brooke Jansen with 16 and Whitney Zumbahlen with 14.

The tournament continues today with six games on tap and finishes out Friday.
