Effingham St. Anthony handed Okaw Valley a 56-33 loss in girls basketball action Thursday evening during alumni festivities.

The Bulldogs ran off to a 20-7 opening quarter lead behind three players scoring. Shea Kinkelaar and Riley Guy tallied seven points each while Clare McHugh chipped in with six.

Then it was five players scoring in the second quarter 18-9 run for a 38-16 halftime lead.

Three Bulldogs finished in double figures. McHugh led the way with 18 points while Kinkelaar added 13 and Guy 11. McHugh and Meg Richards had six rebounds each. Kinkelaar added five steals and three assists.

"We had a great first half," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "I could tell the girls were excited to have the alumni there. We got off to a great start, making shots and getting up in ball pressure to turn over their guards.

"I want to thank all the alumni and coaches that came out to support the team tonight. It was special."

The Bulldogs are now 10-5 on the season. St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest, 51-11.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis took the early lead and ran off to a 64-36 victory over Paris Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held a 19-10 opening quarter lead and led 37-20 at halftime and 55-27 going into the final period.

Two players tallied double figures for the Shoes while 10 players scored in the contest. Lexie Niebrugge and Claire Bushur scored 12 points each while Olivia Niemerg was on the verge of double figures with nine and Morgan Mette and Sadie Bueker had eight each.

Niemerg had six steals and five rebounds in the contest. Bushur pulled down a whopping 12 rebounds. S. Bueker had two assists.

North Clay (Louisville) hosted South Central in National Trail Conference play and claimed a 67-34 victory Thursday evening.

North Clay took a 20-8 opening quarter lead and led 30-22 at halftime. The Cardnials then had a 29-10 third period run.

No scoring was turned in for North Clay.

South Central was led by Laney Webster with 11 points. The Cougars drop to 3-8 on the season.

At Louisville

At Nokomis

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a non-conference victory over Nokomis, 51-31 in action Thursday.

BSE stepped out to a 15-9 opening quarter lead and led 27-16 at halftime and 43-25 going into the final quarter.

BSE had two players score in double figures. Claire Wilhour tallied 20 points on seven field goals and six of nine at the line. She also had eight rebounds and four steals. Olivia Campbell tallied 10 points, had six boards and three steals. Audrey Wilhour chipped in with four rebounds and three steals.

Neoga picked up a non-conference win over Casey-Westfield, 45-28 Thursday.

The Indians led 25-18 at halftime then had an 11-4 third quarter run.

Olivia Titus, a junior, scored 20 points, hitting eight field goals that included four three-pointers. Mary Hill chipped in with 14.

Neoga improves to 7-8 on the season.

Pana hosted Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and sent the Bobcats home with a 74-48 loss Thursday evening.

CHBC held a 15-11 opening quarter lead but Pana came back with a 20-10 second period and had a 43-23 second half.

CHBC was led by two players in double figures. Hailey Persinger tallied 15 while Jaelyn Robertson added 11. Tabitha Endsley had six rebounds. Kylee Bertin led in assists with three. Lani Morrison had two steals.

Fairfield played host to Newton and edged the Eagles, 36-33.

Fairfield took the two-point lead in the opening quarter and held that until the final period with a 10-9 edge for the win.

Eliza Bierman led the Eagles with 12 points. Claire Carr and Whitney Zumbahlen led in rebounds with eight each. Allison Harris had three assists while Bierman had two. Brooke Jansen, Bierman and Carr had two steals each.

Newton drops to 3-10 on the season. Fairfield also claimed the junior varsity contest, 57-30.

At Arthur

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg picked up a victory in opening round play of the Knights Holiday Classic.

WSS easily outdistanced Chrisman 28-4 in the opening quarter and it was only a matter of the winning margin as the Hatchets tallied a 69-17 win.

Three players hit double figures. Nikki Trussell led the way with 17 points while Mikala Nichols added 16 and Megan Schlechte 12.

Cumberland fell to Sullivan, 64-29. Sullivan held a 37-11 halftime lead.

Cumberland was led by Josie Brown with 13 points.

In other games, Tuscola defeated Shelbyville 44-15 and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond won 42-29 over Blue Ridge.

The tournament continues today with eight games on tap and will end Saturday.

WSS will face Cumberland at 5 p.m. in the East Gym then take on Sullivan at 8 p.m. in the West Gym. Cumberland squares off against Chrisman at 8 p.m. in the East Gym.
