Effingham St. Anthony took the early lead and never looked back in a 55-27 non-conference high school girls basketball win over Sandoval in action Monday evening.

The Bulldogs led 14-9 after the opening quarter and 35-14 at halftime. Clare McHugh tallied six in the opening quarter and had 10 by halftime. Shea Kinkelaar had nine by the half and Meg Richards went on a tear in the second period after only scoring one basket in the first quarter.

The senior forward nailed four baskets and was four of five at the line for 12 in that quarter and finished with 19 for the game. Also in double figures were McHugh with 14 and Kinkelaar with 10. McHugh had six assists while Abby Repking had eight steals. Richards and Kinkelaar finished with six rebounds each.

"It is nice to hold a team under the magic number of 32 points," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "That is what we used to preach every year and I challenged the five seniors and when they came out we were at 21 points.

"We had great offensive games by Meg, Clare and Shea. The defense was anchored by Abby Repking and Sydney Gibson."

Sandoval was led by Lyons with 13 and Brandt with 10.

Teutopolis claimed a junior varsity win over St. Anthony, 41-28. Sandoval did not have enough players for a JV squad.
