EHS Falls In Apollo Conference, Area Boys Friday Roundup

Charleston High School came to town Friday evening and handed Effingham a 73-67 Apollo Conference boys basketball loss.

The two squads were tied at 15-15 in the opening quarter. Effingham moved ahead 30-28 at halftime as Cole Marxman hit four baskets and a free throw for nine points.

Charleston came back with a 19-13 third quarter run to lead 47-43 going into the final period. Charleston then had a 26-24 final quarter.

Four Trojans finished in double figures with Cade Landrus leading with 20 points.

Effingham had three players in double digits. Landon Wolfe tallied 35, 24 of those points coming in the second half. Cole Marxman scored 16 and Parker Wolfe 11.

The Hearts won the junior varsity game, 51-45.

Neoga claimed a non-conference victory over Arcola Friday evening, 54-22.

The Indians ran off to a 17-7 opening quartet lead and led 31-14 at halftime.

Trevor Roy tallied 16 for the winners while Reece Johnson added 14.

South Central played host to Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran and handed the visitors a 63-49 non-conference loss in action Friday.

The Cougars took a 17-9 opening quarter lead and led 37-22 at halftime. CORL came back with a 19-9 third period to pull within 46-41 going into the final quarter. South Central regained the momentum with a 17-8 final period.

Collin Miller and Hunter Brandt tallied 19 points each for the Cougars while Logan Lotz scored 11.

South Central improves to 5-4 on the season.

Robinson claimed a win over Newton, 49-31 in Friday play.

Robinson ran off to a 15-4 opening quarter lead and led 27-14 at halftime.

Childress scored 19 for the winners while Lassen added 11.

St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Tournament

Two games were contested Friday evening in the St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Tournament.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City defeated Patoka, 77-60.

Breaking an 18-18 opening quarter tie, CHBC led 35-29 at halftime then had a whopping 21-9 third quarter run.

Dylan Webster led in scoring with 18 points while Dylan Taylor added 12 and Keegan Martin and Trace Smith with 10 each.

In the second contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Vandalia, 66-65.

SEB led 16-14 after the opening quarter but the Vandals moved ahead 43-28 at halftime. SEB came back with a 19-13 third period and the two teams played to a 9-9 final period.

Andy Goldsborough, a 6-foot-1 junior, led in scoring with 22 points while Bryton Pruett added 19 for the winners. Goldsborough had four three-pointers.

Saturday's schedule includes Ramsey against Patoka at 3 for seventh place, CHBC taking on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg for fifth place at 4:30, Cumberland meeting Vandalia for third at 6 and SEB taking on Mulberry Grove at 7:30 for the championship.

At Wayne City

North Clay (Louisville) competed in the 65th Annual Conrad Allen Wayne City Tournament Saturday.

The Cardinals defeated Wayne City 49-42 to take home the third place trophy. North Clay went 3-1 in the tourney.

Alan Rinehart was voted to the All-Tournament Team. Rinehart finished with16 along with Nick Miller 14 and Tyson Jones 11.

North Clay improves to 6-4.
