Hearts Pick Up AC Victory Over M-S

Coach Jeff Schafer's Effingham High School girls basketball squad picked up an Apollo Conference win over visiting Mahomet-Seymour Monday evening, 50-33.

The Hearts trailed the Bulldogs, 11-8 after the opening quarter but came up with a 10-3 second period run to lead 18-14 at halftime. Natalie Carie nailed two baskets and two free throws for six of the Hearts 10 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs had only one basket, a three-pointer.

Effingham had an 11-9 third quarter run and finished out strong with a 21-10 final period.

Carie, a senior, knocked in six baskets, including two three-pointers and was three of three at the line for 17 points. Taylor Armstrong contributed eight points while Skyler Schafer added seven.

Kailyn Northrup and Maddy Wade led M-S with 10 points each.

Effingham improves to 3-1 in the Apollo Conference, 8-1 overall. The Hearts are back in action Saturday hosting Mount Zion in conference play at 1 p.m.

At Neoga

Neoga played host to Cumberland and picked up a 45-22 non-conference victory Monday evening.

The Indians edged out to an 11-5 opening quarter lead and led 18-13 at halftime. Neoga then had an 18-3 third period.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Olivia Titus led the way with 12 points while Kylee Phillips added 11 and Mary Hill 10.

Neoga improves to 6-5 on the season and plays host to Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday.

Neoga hosted Effingham in freshman girls action and won 28-12.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a non-conference win over Oblong, 51-30 in action Monday.

The Hatchets stepped out to an 18-10 opening quarter lead and led 34-16 at halftime.

Three players finished in double figures. Megan Schlechte, a 6-foot senior, led the way with 14 points while Hannah Hayes and Nikki Trussell chipped in with 10 points each.

At Ramsey

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City put together a 70-26 non-conference victory over Ramsey Monday evening.

The Bobcats ran off to a 23-9 opening quarter lead and led 47-14 at halftime.

Eleven players scored in the contest led by Jaelyn Robertson, a junior, with 21 points and Kylee Bertin, also a junior, with 10. Robertson connected on 10 of 13 field goals that included one three-pointer.

Kylee Bertin led in rebounds with eight while Lauren Wojcik and Tabitha Endsley had six each. Hailey Persinger led in assists with three. Bertin and Tatyana Duckwitz had two steals each.

Altamont had a big scoring second period and that was the game in a 59-47 National Trail Conference win over North Clay (Louisville) Monday.

The Indians and Cardinals played to a 13-13 opening quarter tie. Altamont then had a 21-8 second period run.

Four players were in double figures for the winners. Rachel Jackman led the way with 15 points while Brooke Runge added 14, JoAnna Schultz 12 and Tinley Mette 10. Mayhaus had 12 rebounds and four assists while Runge had four assists. Ti. Mette had four steals.

North Clay was led by Madison Lovett with 24 points.

At Altamont

Red Hill (Bridgeport) came calling and claimed a victory over Newton, 32-27 Monday.

Newton held a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 13-12 at halftime. But Red Hill came back with a 20-14 second half run.

Whitney Zumbahlen was the lone player in double figures for the Eagles with 10 points. She also had 10 rebounds and three steals.

Newton drops to 1-2 in the Little Illini Conference, 2-8 overall.

The Eagles won the junior varsity contest, 24-16 to improve to 4-2.
