CLINTON -- Sigel St. Michael will be playing for third place after competing in the Class 8-1A State Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Clinton Junior High School.

St. Michael won its opener over Monmouth ICS, 22-19. The Sharpshooters trailed 2-1 after the opening quarter but held a 13-6 halftime lead. Monmouth came back in the second half with a 13-9 lead but couldn't make up that second quarter run by St. Michael.

Kaylee Niebrugge led the way with six points.

In other opening round games, Ottawa Wallace downed Carrollton St. John, 44-31; Washington St. Patrick won over Gifford, 35-20 and Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell easily handled Mount Pulaski, 54-29.

In the semifinals, St. Michael fell to Ottawa Wallace, 39-27 and Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell downed Washington St. Patrick, 43-18.

St. Michael fell behind 12-8 after the opening quarter and trailed Ottawa Wallace 21-16 at halftime. Ottawa Wallace maintained control in the second half.

The Sharpshooters were led by Niebrugge with 15 points and Taylor Bueker with six.

St. Michael (20-6) now faces Washington St. Patrick (26-2) at 6 p.m. Thursday for third place. Ottawa Wallace (28-0) will take on Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell (23-0) at 7:30 for the championship.

Class 8-2A State Tournament

North Clay (Louisville) saw its stay at the Class 8-2A State Tournament end in the opening contest.

Nokomis edged North Clay 38-35. The two teams were tied at 10-10 in the opening quarter before Nokomis took a 25-19 halftime lead. North Clay came back in the third quarter to tie the score at 31-31. Nokomis then had a 7-4 final period for the victory.

Allison Czyzewski tallied 12 to lead North Clay while Rachel Holkenbrink had seven.

In other first round games, Paris Crestwood won over Elmwood, 42-28; Mendon Unity downed Colfax Ridgeview, 44-18 and Havana won over Bourbonnais St. George, 48-25.

In the semifinals, Paris Crestwood downed Nokomis, 36-13 and Mendon Unity won over Havana, 31-26.

Nokomis faces Havana Thursday at 6 p.m. for third place while Paris Crestwood meets Mendon Unity at 7:30 p.m. for the state championship.

Class 8-3A State Tournament

Germantown Hills ended Teutopolis' stay at the Class 8-3A State Tournament at Germantown Hills Middle School with a 32-24 win.

T-town held a 10-8 opening quarter lead and led 18-17 at hafltime. Germantown Hills then had an 8-0 third period and went on for the victory.

Emily Konkel tallied 12 points to lead the Wooden Shoes who end the season at 24-4.

In other first round games, Quincy St. Peter won over Peru Parkside, 35-10 while Hillsboro beat Peotone, 41-23 and Mackinaw Dee-Mack edged Dunlap Valley MS, 25-23.

In the semifinals, Quincy St. Peter beat Germantown Hills, 49-46 and Mackinaw Dee-Mack won over Hillsboro, 36-31.

Germantown Hills will face Hilslboro at 6 p.m. Thursday for third place while Quincy St. Peter takes on Mackinaw Dee-Mack at 7:30 for the state title.

Class 8-4A State Tournament

Effingham saw its season come to an end in a heartbreaking, 34-32 loss to Frankfort Summitt Hill at Macon Meridian High School Saturday.

Frankfort Summit Hill edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 17-15 at halftime. The Mustangs came back with a 10-6 third quarter run to lead 25-23 going into the final quarter. Frankfort Summit Hill then had an 11-7 final period.

Effingham was led by Ella Niebrugge with 10 points and Marissa Allie with eight. The Mustangs finished with a 21-3 record and are 42-5 in their junior high career.

In other first round games, Shorewood Troy defeated Arlington Heights Thomas, 65-43 while Rochester won over Lansing Memorial, 52-36 and East St. Louis Lincoln pounded East Peoria Central, 51-24.

In semifinal action, Shorewood Troy easily handled Rochester, 41-11 and East St. Louis Lincoln edged Frankfort Summit Hill, 45-44.

Rochester meets Frankfort Summit Hill at 6 p.m. Thursday for third place while Shorewood Troy takes on East St. Louis Lincoln at 7:30 for the championship.
