ALTAMONT -- A big scoring opening half put Altamont High School on the winning track for a 57-47 National Trail Conference girls basketball victory over Effingham St. Anthony Monday evening.
The Indians stepped out to a 19-13 first quarter lead as Brooke Runge scored seven and Tinley Mette six in the run. St. Anthony kept close in that opening period as Riley Guy tallied seven.
But the Indians continued to push the lead higher with a 13-9 second period for a 32-22 halftime lead and that's where the game would end with a 10-point victory.
Altamont's Mette knocked in seven field goals, including two three-pointers and three of six at the line for 19 points. Runge was just off double figures with nine points.
St. Anthony was led by Clare McHugh with 15 points while Guy, Reese Jones and Sydney Gibson had eight each.
"What a great girls basketball game," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "There was intensity, speed, scoring and defense. Both teams played well, we just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half, but the second half we flipped the script."
Jones, Meg Richards, Gibson and Guy had two assists each. Gibson had one steal. McHugh led in rebounds with six. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-1 in the NTC, 6-3 overall.
Altamont improved to 3-0 in the conference and stand at 8-1 overall.
