CASEY -- The second half proved to be just what Effingham St. Anthony needed in a 48-28 girls basketball win over host Casey-Westfield Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs took a 14-9 opening quarter lead as Gibson connected on two baskets and two free throws. The two teams played to an 8-8 second period and the Bulldogs held a 22-17 halftime lead.

But St. Anthony took off in the third quarter with a 15-3 run as three players guided the Bulldogs. Kinkelaar produced seven points in the quarter while McHugh and Richards scored four each.

The Bulldogs then finished out with an 11-8 final period to improve to 5-1.

"Good balanced attack and the girls came out after halftime and took great patient shots," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "That resulted in higher percentage shots and several offensive rebounds."

McHugh finished with 12 to lead the way while Kinkelaar added nine and Gibson eight. Jones had four assists and four steals while Richards pulled down seven rebounds.

St. Anthony is back in action Thursday at Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a varsity only contest at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs won the junior varsity contest, 39-4 and is 2-0.
