Hearts Win, Bulldogs Lose on Final Day of St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament

The Effingham Hearts staged a second-half comeback to post a win and the St. Anthony Bulldogs made it close at the end but lost on the final day of the 2018 St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.
Effingham defeated the Robinson Maroons 60-53, while the Breese Central Cougars held off St. Anthony 55-49. Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
EFFINGHAM 60, ROBINSON 53
Aside from one one-point lead, Robinson led Effingham through three quarters. The Hearts, though, outscored Robinson 15-6 in the fourth quarter to post the win.
The Maroons led by as many as seven points and were up 17-11 after one quarter, 33-29 at halftime, and 47-45 after three quarters as the Hearts methodically chipped away at the deficit. The Hearts pulled ahead by as many as nine points before winning by seven.
Effingham shot 60% from the field, 26 of 43, including 5 of 17 threes. That means the Hearts were 21 of 26 on twos. Effingham made 3 of 7 foul shots, turned the ball over just eight times, and grabbed 22 rebounds.
Robinson shot 38% from the field, 18 of 48, including 5 of 20 threes. The Maroons made 12 of 18 free throws, turned the ball over nine times, and pulled down 25 rebounds.
Landon Wolfe led the Hearts with 25 points on 12 of 18 shooting, and pulled down six rebounds. Parker Wolfe scored 14 points, 11 in the second half. Tate Niebrugge and Cole Marxman each scored seven points, Tristin Duncan four, and Drew Thompson three.
For Robinson, Chance Black led the way with 17 points, while Dylan Smith and Brayden Childress each added 14 points, Kade Lassen seven and Ethan Shidler one.
While the Hearts finished the week 2-2, Robinson is 1-3.

BREESE CENTRAL 55, ST. ANTHONY 49
The Bulldogs had a tough night shooting against a stout Breese Central defense. St. Anthony was 7 of 19 in the first half, and just 2 of 12 in the third quarter. It got better in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs were 6 of 14, finishing 15 of 45 on the night for 33%, including 5 of 14 threes. St. Anthony made 14 of 19 foul shots, committed just eight turnovers and pulled down 22 rebounds.
After scoring 28 points through the first three quarters and trailing big at one point, St. Anthony started making some shots and hit five of eight foul shots in the period to pull within six at the buzzer.
Breese Central made 16 of 34 shots, 47%, including 4 of 8 threes. The Cougars made 19 of 32 foul shots, turned the ball over nine times and grabbed 19 rebounds.
Jaccob Dust had a big night for St. Anthony, scoring 16 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from the line. Dust also pulled down seven rebounds. Kaden Fearday had nine points, Jack Hoene and Aaron Webb with six each, Luke Ludwig and Alex Brandenburger five apiece, and Bryson Wall two.
Simon Thomas had a great night for Breese Central, leading all scorers with 23 points including 8-of-10 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line. Also for the Cougars: Logan Hamilton 7, Camden Wempe 6, Max Kampwerth and Jackson Haag 5 each, Reese Martin 4, Braden Thomas 3, and Parker Loepker 2.
Breese Central finished the tournament 3-1, while St. Anthony is 2-2.
