Lady Hearts Improve to 4-0 w/Win at Newton Tourney (ADDITIONAL INFO)

Effingham improved to 4-0 on the season and won the Bob Kerans Newton Thanksgiving Tournament with a 60-19 win over Newton Friday.

 

Effingham led 23-4 after the first quarter, 41-10 at halftime, and 54-17 after three quarters before outpointing Newton 6-2 in the final period.

Effingham Coach Jeff Schafer said, "This was a good start to our season heading into conference play." 

Schafer also focused on the play of his squad: "Natalie (Carie) had a good game after early foul trouble; she really showed her maturity; Skyler (Schafer) did a nice job with 11 points and 7 rebounds; Miranda (Fox) ran the show for us dishing out 6 assists; and Carsyn (Fearday) and Abby (Weis) combined for 21 points. It was a solid, all-around effort."

Carie and Weis each scored 12 points, Schafer 11, Fearday 9, Callie Feldhake 4, Fox 4, and Madison Buscher, Kiyah Kuhlman, Taylor Armstrong and Hayley Diveley 2 each.

Jansen scored nine points to lead Newton. Bierman and Zumbahlen scored 4 apiece, and Russell scored 2 points.

 In the other Friday contests, Vandalia beat Flora 46-27 and Altamont pounded Flora 69-33.

 Effingham won the tournament, going 4-0, Altamont was second at 3-1, Vandalia was 2-2, Flora was 1-3, and Newton was 0-4.

Effingham's Carsyn Fearday was named Tournament MVP. Also on the All-Tournament Team: Abby Weis and Miranda Fox from Effingham, Brooke Runge and JoAnna Schultz from Altamont, and Lanee McNary of Vandalia.
