EHS Wins, St. Anthony Drops Opener in Tourneys

NEWTON -- Effingham High School claimed its second victory in the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.
The Hearts defeated Vandalia, 58-27. EHS zipped out to an 18-6 opening quarter lead and led 34-16 at halftime. EHS then had an 18-4 third period run.
Leading the Hearts was Abby Weis with 17, Carsyn Fearday with 13 and Skyler Schafer with 10.
In the second contest, Altamont defeated Newton, 65-23. The Indians held a 31-23 halftime lead then had a 20-6 third period run to put the game away.
The Indians had four players hit double figures. Mayhaus tallied 12 while Schultz and Ti. Mette had 11 each and Runge finished with 10.
Leading Newton was Zumbahlen with 11 points.
Effingham has a 2-0 record while Flora is 1-0, Altamont 1-1, Vandalia 0-1 and Newton 0-2.
The tournament continues tonight with Altamont against Vandalia at 5, Effingham facing Flora at 6:30 and Newton against Vandalia at 8.

At Robinson
Effingham St. Anthony opened play in the Robinson Thanksgiving Tournament but fell to Oblong, 45-39 in overtime Tuesday.
Oblong edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead. The Bulldogs had a 10-4 second period to lead 17-13 at halftime. St. Anthony continued its strong surge with a 15-12 third period to lead 32-25 going into the final quarter. Oblong came back with a 12-5 final period to tie the score at 37-37.
Oblong then took charge of the overtime with an 8-2 run to pull out the victory.
"Games are tough to win when you shoot 21 percent from the field," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We missed a lot of bunnies and wide open jumpers. Well, let's see how we respond from a tough loss on Friday."
St. Anthony was led by Guy with 11 points and McHugh with 10. McHugh pulled down 13 rebounds and Richards added 10 boards.
Marshall handed Robinson a 55-38 loss. There was no report on the Olney vs. Fairfield game.
The tournament will continue Friday with six games on tap. St. Anthony will take on Olney at 9 a.m. followed by Mount Carmel against Martinsville at 10:30 and Oblong facing Fairfield at noon. The tourney continues in the evening with Robinson against Mount Carmel at 5 followed by St. Anthony facing Fairfield at 6:30 and Martinsville against Marshall at 8.
