Hearts Lose Opener at St. Anthony Tourney

The Effingham Hearts fought back late in the game, but Highland posted a 61-55 win over Effingham in the season opener for both teams. The game at the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham was able to hold the Bulldogs down early and led 8-5 after one quarter, but Highland then scored 18, 19 and 19 points in the final three quarters. It was 23-21 Highland at halftime and 42-32 Highland after three quarters. Effingham outscored the Bulldogs 23-19 in the final period, but Highland held on for the six-point win.

Highland made 51% of its shots (19 of 37) from the field to 38% (18 of 48) for the Hearts. Highland tried 32 free throws to 19 for the Hearts and the Bulldogs made 18 to just 11 for Effingham. 

Each team committed 12 turnovers and Effingham outrebounded Highland 27 to 23. The Hearts were 8 of 22 on threes, while Highland made 4 of 7 threes.

Landon Wolfe led Effingham with 25 points on a 7-of-21 shooting night and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Parker Wolfe scored 12 points and Nate Thompson scored 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting including two threes. Tate Niebrugge scored five points and Drew Thompson scored the other two points.

Four players were in double figures for Highland: Jake Kruse with 20, Stephen Torre with 17, and Brady Feldman and Sam LaPorta with 10 apiece.
