MULBERRY GROVE -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, South Central and St. Elmo/Brownstown were opening round winners in the Mulberry Grove Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

CHBC opened with a 55-23 victory over Father McGivney. No other information was provided on the game.

In the second contest, South Central downed Patoka, 50-24. The Cougars took a 16-4 opening quarter lead and led 28-12 at halftime.

Lotz tallied 24 for the winners while Brandt added nine.

In the final contest of the evening, St. Elmo/Brownstown pounded Ramsey, 62-27.

Ramsey held an 8-6 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a vengeance, outscoring Ramsey 29-7 in the second period.

Bryton Pruett tallied 16 for the winners while Andy Goldsborough added 15. Goldsborough led in rebounds with 10 while Jace McWhorter added eight. Sam Klein and Nick Rosborough led in steals with three each. Goldsborough and McWhorter had two blocked shots each.

Action continues tonight as South Central meets Mount Olive at 5:15, Father Givney faces Ramsey at 6:45 and Mulberry Grove takes on Patoka at 8:15

Cerro Gordo Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg dropped a close contest to Cerro Gordo/Bement in tournament opening round play Monday evening, 47-44.

In the opening contest, Sangamon Valley defeated University High, 72-41.

In the second game, WSS edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead but Cerro Gordo/Bement came back to lead 21-14 at halftime. The Hatchets outscored Cerro Gordo/Bement 30-26 in the second half but couldn't make up that second quarter run.

J. Miller led the Hatchets with 19 points while Burton added nine.

Tonight's games have Villa Grove/Heritage against Blue Ridge at 6 p.m. followed by Heyworth taking on Clinton at 7:30. WSS won't be back in action until Friday against University High at 1:30 and Sangamon Valley at 6.
