EHS Wins, St. Anthony Loses in Opening Round Games of EHS Girls Tourney; Highland, LIC Roundups

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Centralia 48-44 while Effingham downed Neoga 46-31 as the Effingham High School Girls Round Robin Tournament opened play Monday evening.

The tourney continues tonight with Centralia taking on Dieterich at 6:15 p.m. and St. Anthony squaring off against host Effingham at 7:45 p.m.

Centralia 48, St. Anthony 44

The Bulldogs edged out to a 9-8 opening quarter lead as Megan Nuxoll scored five points and Makayla Walsh four. Centralia came back with an 11-10 edge in the second quarter to knot the score at 19-19 at halftime.

Centralia then had a 12-8 third period run and that was the difference in the game. Meadows tallied 19 and Holtkamp 13 for the winners.

St. Anthony was led by Walsh with 25 as the 5-foot-6 junior scored 14 of her total points in the second half, 10 in the final quarter. Nuxoll finished with nine points.

Effingham 46, Neoga 31

Effingham held a 24-19 halftime lead then outscored Neoga 22-12 in the second half for the win.

Josie Zerrusen led the Hearts with 12 points. Kelli Utz and Stephanie Robb scored nine each. Neoga was led by Elecia Thies with 20.

HIGHLAND TOURNAMENT

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City picked up a first victory at the 27th Annual Highland Tournament.

After suffering an opening loss Saturday, the Hornets claimed their first win in consolation round play over Troy Triad 57-13.

The Hornets stepped out to a 15-2 opening quarter lead and led 29-7 at halftime. CHBC held a 42-9 third period lead.

Micah Jones scored 23 for the winners while Autumn Riley chipped in with nine.

The Hornets will now face Salem, a 54-42 winner over Belleville Althoff, at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

In other tourney games, Nashville defeated Hillsboro 46-15 and Belleville West won over Carlyle 54-43. Nashville and Belleville West square off at 8 p.m. Wednesday for the right to advance to the championship game.

LITTLE ILLINI CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

In consolation bracket play Monday evening at the Little Illini Conference Tournament, Palestine/Hutsonville defeated Edwards County (Albion) 55-28 and  Casey-Westfield won over Cumberland 59-32. There were no reports on the Oblong vs. Robinson and Lawrenceville vs. Red Hill (Bridgeport) games.

The Warriors stepped out to a 23-12 opening quarter lead and held 37-14 at halftime.

Decker tallied 17 points and Birchfield 14 for the winners. Cumberland was led by Kamisha Holsapple with 17.

Casey-Westfield will now take on either Lawrenceville or Red Hill at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday while Palestine/Hutsonville faces either Oblong or Robinson at 6 p.m.

Tonight's games feature Marshall against Flora at 6 p.m. and Olney taking on Newton at 7:30 p.m. The two winners advance to the championship game set for Thursday at 8 p.m.
