INDIANAPOLIS – Last season Eastern Illinois made two free throws in the final seconds to beat IUPUI in Charleston.  On Saturday it was IUPUI making seven of ten from the line in the final 36 seconds to hold off EIU, 71-65, at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.

Josiah Wallace capped a 6-0 EIU run that trimmed an eight point Jaguars lead down to 64-62 with 1:21 left in the game.  EIU would then have two shots to tie the game just under the minute mark after Rade Kukobat pulled down a rebound on a IUPUI miss.  The Panthers were unable to tie the game and had to foul over the final 36 seconds.

Nick Rogers made four of the free throws down the stretch for IPUI as he was 6-of-10 from the stripe finishing with nine points.  Cameron Justice had 21 to lead IUPUI as the Jaguars improved to 1-1 on the season.

IUPUI opened the game on an 8-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers by Justice.  EIU would respond and take the lead 11-9 on a Ben Harvey 3-pointer.  Harvey scored 10 points off the bench as he was one of five Panthers to score in double figures.

Grant Weatherford answered Harvey’s bucket before Wallace knocked down a jumper to give EIU the lead for the final time at 13-12 with 9:44 to play in the first.  Weatherford was 5-of-5 shooting for IUPUI finishing with 14 points.  Wallace had 12 points for EIU.

A pair Rogers free throws just before half gave IUPUI a 35-31 lead at the half.   IUPUI opened the second half with a 13-3 lead as they extended the lead to 48-34 on a Justice lay-up with 15:23 remaining.

EIU battled back to trim the lead to two points on the Wallace free throws but never got closer.

Kukobat had a team high 18 points with Shareef Smith scoring 13.  Mack Smith had 12 points and eight rebounds.  EIU shot 36 percent for the game as the Panthers fell to 0-2 on the year.

Butler 72, EIU Women 37

INDIANAPOLIS -- Eastern Illinois women's basketball fell on the road Friday afternoon. Butler secured their first win of the year beating EIU 72-37. The Panthers fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 1-0.

The Bulldogs set the offensive pace early in the first quarter as they jumped out to an 8-0 run over the Panthers. Karle Pace hit EIU's first field goal of the game with just under seven minutes left in the quarter. Butler would force an EIU time out with three consecutive jumpers in the paint. Grace McRae and Taylor Steele connected from the field to chip away at Butler's lead, but the Bulldogs closed the quarter with an 8-1 run.

Butler continued their run into the second quarter outscoring the Panthers 20-1 from the 55 second mark in the first quarter to the 4:43 mark in the second quarter. Carmen Tellez hit a three-pointer off the bench to spark EIU's second quarter offense. The Bulldogs headed into halftime with a 41-17 lead over EIU forcing the Panthers to shoot just 25 percent from the field.

The Panthers found their momentum in the third quarter scoring 15 points to the Bulldogs 16. Steele scored eight points in the quarter, while Tellez and Pace combined for six points. Despite EIU's offensive production, Butler took a 72-37 win.

Steele finished with a team-best 11 points. Pace followed behind with eight points and a team-best four rebounds. Grace Lennox led the team with four steals. The Panthers finished the game shooting 25 percent from the field.

Tori Schickel completed a double-double for Butler with 16 points and 12 boards. Kristen Spolyar and Michelle Weaver also finish in double-digits with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field in the game. Weaver was a perfect 5-for-5. Butler out-rebounded EIU 47-20 and scored 48 points in the paint to EIU's 10.

The Panthers will be back in action next week with a pair of home games. EIU will host Lincoln Christian on Monday Nov. 12 at  pm and Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday Nov. 15 at 12 pm.

Winthrop 94, SIUE 82

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's basketball had five players score in double figures Saturday and shot 48 percent from the field, but it wasn't enough to overcome 14 Winthrop three-pointers as the Cougars fell 94-82 to the Eagles at Vadalabene Center.

Winthrop moves to 1-1 on the season while the Cougars fall to 0-2.

Eight of Winthrop's 14 three-pointers came in the second half. Guards Bjorn Broman (13 points) and Adam Pickett (24 points) combined to go 9-15 from three.

"Winthrop is a very good team and we knew that coming in," SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris said. "We battled and the guys stayed right there. We didn't do a good enough job containing the ball and that's how they got all those threes."

The Cougars kept things close in the first half before the Eagles went on two separate runs to make it 35-28 with four minutes to go in the half.

Winthrop was up 43-39 when SIUE's David McFarland made a half court buzzer-beating three-pointer to make it 43-42 heading into half.

McFarland led the Cougars with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He connected on two three-pointers. He added two rebounds and an assist.

"David is doing some really good things, and he's been very consistent," Harris added. "He's working hard every day in practice and the guys are playing towards and for him."

Brandon Jackson finished the game with 13 points and five boards for the Cougars. Daniel Kinchen and Cameron Williams each scored 11 points and Tyresse Williford added 10 points. Anselm Uzuegbunem led SIUE with seven rebounds.

The Cougars will be on the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Valparaiso.

"We're doing some good things," Harris said. "The score tonight doesn't really show it, but we aren't too far away."
