STRASBURG -- Effingham St. Anthony won the championship of the Cumberland Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Bullpups opened with a 23-13 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg. St. Anthony stepped out to a 12-6 opening quarter lead and led the rest of the way.

Fearday led St. Anthony with 10 points. Stew-Stras was led by Vonderheide and Richards with four points each.

In the other opening round contest, Cumberland downed Effingham Sacred Heart, no score was reported.

In the third place game, Stew-Stras beat Sacred Heart, 26-11. Stew-Stras held a 14-4 first half lead.

Richards scored 10 for the winners. Sherrod led Sacred Heart with five.

In the championship game, St. Anthony won over Cumberland, 28-18.

The Bullpups held a 13-8 halftime lead and led by eight going into the final quarter. Fearday tallied 13 for the Bullpups. Cumberland was led by Becker with nine.

At Effingham

Effingham downed Dieterich in action Friday.

In the seventh-grade contest, the Mustangs captured a 24-4 victory. Effingham led 16-2 at halftime.

Volpi led Effingham with eight points. Goebel and Westendorf had two points each for Dieterich.

In the eighth-grade game, Effingham stepped out to a 15-0 opening quarter lead and went on for a 38-4 victory.

The Mustangs were led by Annie Frost with 11 and Ella Niebrugge with eight. C. Brummer led Dieterich with two.

At Greenville

Altamont picked up a seventh-grade win over host Greenville Friday, 44-27.

Altamont took a 23-13 halftime lead and had a 10-4 third period. Three players hit double digits. Kalianna Becker led the way with 14 while Remington Miller and Peyton Osteen had 10 each.

In eighth-grade action, Altamont picked up a 22-16 win. Altamont led 14-8 at halftime and 20-12 going into the final quarter.

Grace Nelson tallied 12 to lead the winners.
