Effingham Wins Twice, Sacred Heart, St. Anthony Once In Junior High Basketball Play

VANDALIA -- Effingham traveled to Vandalia and picked up a 10-point victory in seventh-grade play Monday evening, 43-33.

The Mustangs jumped out to an 11-6 opening quarter lead and led by nine at halftime then extended it to 14 after three quarters. Vandalia outscored Effingham by four in the final period. Mason Hull led the Mustangs with 14 points and five rerbounds. Effingham is now 11-4 on the season.

In eighth-grade action, Effingham claimed a 64-38 victory. The Mustangs led 35-19 at halftime and never looked back. Donaldson tallied 23 while Beals chipped in with 15. Donaldson led in rebounds with six and Wolfe led in steals with three.

Effingham is now 15-1 on the season. The Mustangs are back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. against Casey-Westfield. It will be the regular season finale for the seventh-grade squad.

Effingham Sacred Heart split wins with Altamont Lutheran. Altamont Lutheran was a 33-31 winner in seventh-grade play.

Sigg led Altamont Lutheran with 12. Sacred Heart was led by Rozene with 12 and Helmink with 11.

In the eighth-grade contest, Sacred Heart downed Altamont Lutheran 42-29. The Shamrocks jumped out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead and went on for the victory. Tegeler tallied nine and J. Bushue and Smith scored eight each in even scoring. Altamont Lutheran was led by Kline with 12.

At St. Anthony

Dieterich captured a 41-24 victory over Effingham St. Anthony in the seventh-grade contest.

St. Anthony led 9-4 after the opening quarter and 16-12 at halftime. Dieterich then held the Bullpups scoreless in the third period while taking a 25-16 lead going into the final period. Dieterich then had a 16-8 final quarter run.

Higgs led Dieterich with 14 while Radloff tallied 11. St. Anthony was led by Brandt with eight.

There was no report on the eighth-grade game.

At Teutopolis

In seventh-grade A and B competition, Teutopolis claimed a 42-22 victory in the A game and a 27-24 win in the B contest.

In the A contest, T-town held a 26-13 halftime lead and held Charleston scoreless in the third period while pushing the lead to 38-13. Jackson Hardiek tallied 13 and Collin Funneman 10 for the winners.

In the B game, Teutopolis edged Charleston. T-town held a 15-7 halftime lead and a 25-15 lead going into the final period. Jason Kowalski led T-town with five points. T-town hosts Salem in seventh and eighth-grade aciton Thursday.

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed two wins over Neoga. St. Elmo/Brownstown was a winner in seventh-grade play 44-33 after trailing 20-18 at halftime. St. E/B came back with a 26-13 second half run.

Maxey led the winners with 16 while Brown chipped in with 12. Neoga was led by Ramert with 13 and Hill with 10.

In eighth-grade action, St. Elmo/Brownstown bombed Neoga 54-3. Austin tallied 20 for the winners while Feezel and Miller chipped in with nine each. Yurs led Neoga with two.

Altamont picked up two wins over Beecher City. Altamont claimed the seventh-grade contest easily 47-9.

Runge tallied 16 for the winners while Stevenson added nine. Beecher City was led by Stoldt with five.

In the eighth-grade contest, Altamont won 51-22 with a 21-2 first quarter run. Armstrong scored 14 for the winners. Beecher City was led by Grove with 11.
