MATTOON -- The Effingham Junior High Mustangs got the new year off to a good start in Mattoon with a pair of victories.
The seventh grade started slow only scoring three points and trailing by two. However the second quarter was a different story as the Mustangs outscored the Wildcats 16-4 and took a 10 point half time lead. Effingham then outscored Mattoon by 10 in the third quarter and finished with a 37-18 victory.
Effingham put eight players in the scoring column being led by Ryan Sandifer with 12 and Mason Hull with 11. Hull led the team with five steals. Chase Maroon came off the bench to lead the team with five rebounds and helped with three steals. Effingham improves it record to 10-4.
The eighth grade Mustangs' victory not only propels them to 13-1 on the season and a perfect conference record of 5-0, but gives them back-to-back unbeaten conference seasons.
The final score of 60-36 doesn't tell the whole story as Mattoon play well in the first half and only trailed 23-19. Grant Wolfe led the first half charge with 12 points and then in the second half, Jacob Donaldson scored 10 in the third and 16 in the second half to finish with 24.
Both teams return to action Monday at Vandalia.
