CHBC Claims Dieterich Girls Championship

DIETERICH -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City nabbed the championship of the Dieterich Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Saturday.
CHBC defeated Newton 53-45 for first place. In the third place game, Arcola was a 51-45 winner over Dieterich. The consolation championship went to North Clay (Louisville) over Casey-Westfield 60-56 and the seventh-place game went to Oblong over South Central 58-23.
CHBC 53, Newton 45
Newton took an 18-11 opening quarter lead and led 27-18 at halftime. CHBC then came roaring back with a 16-6 third quarter run and held off a final quarter challenge by the Eagles.
Micah Jones tallied 27 while Ava Paruleski added 11 for the winners. Newton was led by Megan Jansen with 21 and Morgan Swingler with 10.

Arcola 51, Dieterich 45
Arcola edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 27-19 at halftime. The Purple Riders kept the pressure on in the second half to claim third place.
Tayler Edwards tallied 24 for the winners while Rachel Fishel and Cara Edwards scored 10 points each. Dieterich was led by Candace Niemerg with 17 and Sydney Higgs with 11.

For the consolation championship, North Clay jumped out to a 34-23 halftime lead then held off Casey-Westfield's second half challenge.
The Warriors outscored North Clay 33-26 in the second half but fell short.
Teehanna Wyatt led the Cardinals with 18 points while Carleigh Yeager tallied 11. Casey-Westfield was led by Kyleigh Decker with 17, Taylor Birchfield with 16 and Jetta Green with 12.

Oblong claimed seventh-place in the tournament by bouncing South Central. Oblong held a 29-10 hafltime lead and never looked back. The winners banged home nine three-pointers in the contest.
Oblong was led by Harper with 16, Pinkston with 15 and Lockhart with 11. Macie Cain led South Central with 10 points.
