Cahokia Holds Off Flaming Hearts at Centralia; Other Friday Tournament Basketball Scores (UPDATED)

The Cahokia Comanches defeated the Effingham Hearts 48-41 Friday in high school basketball action, but the Comanches knew they were in a battle throughout the contest.
The game at the Centralia Holiday Tournament was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Cahokia, with three players considering college offers from Division I schools, and the Hearts went toe-to-toe. Cahokia led 14-11 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime. The Hearts outscored Cahokia 13-10 in the third quarter to pull within 35-34 and even took a couple of brief leads, but Cahokia outscored Effingham 13-7 in the fourth quarter to secure the seven-point win.
Effingham made 18 of 43 shots for 42%, but only had three foul shots in the game, making two. The Hearts turned the ball over 10 times and grabbed 22 rebounds while making three of nine three-point attempts.
Cahokia hit on 16 of 34 shots and made 10 of 17 foul shots. The Comanches turned the ball over 10 times and pulled down 24 rebounds while hitting on six of 14 three-point tries.
Jake Stombaugh scored 12 points to lead Effingham while also grabbing six rebounds to tie his brother Josh for the lead in that category. Hunter Keith scored nine points and had seven assists. Clark Williamson tallied eight points on four of six shooting. Also for Effingham: Leighton Lark five, Josh Stombaugh three, and Trenton Frey and Tim Gardewine two each.
Keenan Minor scored 16 points to lead Cahokia while Darius Austin scored 11 points and Vincent Jackson 10 points.
Cahokia improved to 10-2 with the win while the Hearts drop to 7-3.
The Hearts will next play Saturday at 8:30am against Oak Lawn Richards. The winner of that game will play at 4:30pm to win the fifth place bracket. A reminder for Hearts' fans who might be attending the 8:30am game that the contest will be played in the annex on the north side of the main parking lot behind Centralia High School.
