VANDALIA -- In the the second day of competition at the 41st Annual Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament, St. Anthony fell to Maroa-Forsyth, 72-55.

The game was actually a lot closer than the final score would indicate. Maroa-Forsyth jumped out to an early 26-18 lead on 11 of 12 shooting. St. Anthony shot the ball well going 9 of 10 from the field but nine turnovers were their undoing.

John Goeckner and Jacob Schuette each scored six in the first quarter. St. Anthony used a balanced attack in the second quarter, getting between two to five points from five players to win the second quarter, 15-13 to cut the lead to 39-33 at halftime.

Goeckner led the third quarter attack by going three-for-three from the field, scoring seven points of St. Anthony's 13, but Maroa-Forsth scored 17 to extend the lead to 10. St. Anthony had pulled within four points but a late run by the Trojans closed out the quarter 56-46.

St. Anthony, for as hard as they played, just could not make many shots in the fourth going three for 12 from the field. The Trojans on the other hand could not miss going 7/11 to win the quarter by 7 to close out the game.

In St. Anthony's second game of the day in the pool play style tournament, the Bulldogs fell to Shelbyville by two.

St. Anthony played some of it's best ball of the season according to Coach Mark Tovey as they continue to improve. Using the one-two scoring punch of Jacob Schuette and John Goeckner the Bulldogs lead at half 29-23. Schuette and Goeckner had 14 and nine respectfully. Another big part of the first half was the defense played by Alex Hoelscher. Hoelscher had the assignment of guarding Shelbyville's 6-foot-7 senior Brody Bence, who coming into the game was averaging just over 19 points a game. Hoelscher held him scoreless and really limited Bence's touches.

St. Anthony still led after three quarters 39-32, however Shelbyville put together a near perfect fourth quarter going eight of nine from the field and four of four from the free throw line while committing only one turnover. St.A found itself down by three with under a minute to play when Jacob Schuette hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 50.

With the score tied and only 29 seconds remaining following a timeout by St. Anthony after the Schuette three, the Rams ran the clock down to about 12 seconds before running their last play. It was a play set up for Bence to receive a lob pass. He caught the lob and was fouled trying to get the shot up. Bence went to the line with 4.2 seconds remaining and made both free throws to give the Rams a two-point lead. St. Anthony then needed to navigate the full length of the floor and they ran a play that led to a great look by John Goeckner. The look was highly contested by Bence and missed long to close out the game and give Shelbyville the victory.

St. Anthony falls to 0-3 in the tournament and 2-9 on the season.

Greenville 50, St. Elmo 49

Flora 63, Flora 40

Greenville took a one-point lead in the opening quarter and had a one-point margin in the third period to edge St. Elmo 50-49.

St. Elmo was led by Levi Maxey with 25 points.

St. Elmo then fell to Flora 63-40 in its second game of the tourney. Flora took a 26-17 halftime lead then had an 18-2 third period run.

Flora was led by Leib with 20 and Shehorn with 14. St. Elmo was led by Connor Beasley with 16 points.

Vandalia edged Altamont. The Vandals took a 6-2 opening quarter lead and led 13-10 at halftime. Vandalia came out with a 15-10 third period run. Altamont attempted a comeback, outscoring Vandalia 14-9 in the third period, but fell short.
