St. Anthony Drops Two Games at Mattoon Girls Tourney

MATTOON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School suffered two losses at the Mattoon Girls Christmas Tournament Thursday.

In the opener, Mattoon edged the Bulldogs 39-34. The Green Wave had the early momentun taking a 19-6 first half lead. St. Anthony came back with a 15-9 third period run and outscored the Green Wave 13-11 in the final quarter but couldn't overcome the first half hole they were in.

Makayla Walsh, a 5-foot-6 junior, was the only Bulldog in double figures with 14.

In the second game, Olney claimed a 48-40 win over the Bulldogs. This time St. Anthony stepped out to the lead with a 13-5 opening quarter run and led 18-13 at halftime. St. Anthony outscored the Tigers 13-8 in the third period to lead 31-21 going into the final period.

Olney came to life with a 27-9 run and pulled out the eight-point win. St. Anthony was led by Walsh with 18 points.

In other games, Mahomet-Seymour 64, Decatur MacArthur 11; Salem 59, Cumberland 21; Olney 64, Vandalia 62; Salem 73, Decatur MacArthur 30; Mahomet-Seymour 79, Cumberland 22 and Mattoon 54, Vandalia 56.
