Neoga Boys, Girls Compete at Monticello Tournament

MONTICELLO -- Neoga High School's boys squad suffered two close losses in opening round play at the Monticello Holiday Tournament while the girls team garnered a victory and suffered a loss.
In boys action, Neoga held an 11 point lead over Gibson City-Melvin Sibley but the Falcons came back to send the game into overtime. Then in the overtime period, GCMS went on to claim the victory.
GCMS held a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 22-18 at halftime. But Neoga came out with a press in the third period, forcing the Falcons into seven turnovers, to take a 40-29 lead. Neoga finished out with three players in double figures. Jake Baker, a 6-foot-1 junior, tallied 19 points while Derek Williamson added 12 and Brandon Maroon 11.
In Neoga's opening contest, the Indians fell to Monticello 59-51. Monticello is coached by Neoga graduate Kevin Roy.
Monticello leaped out to a 23-9 opening quarter lead and led 36-17 at halftime. Monticello still led 52-26 going into the final period when the Indians made a 25-7 run and almost pulled out the win.
J. Baker tallied 29 for the Indians. He was the lone player in double figures.
In girls action, Monticello edged the Indians 55-52 in the opening game of the tournament.
Monticello held a 30-28 halftime lead before Neoga came back in the third quarter with a 14-11 run to lead 42-41. Monticello then put together a 14-10 final period run to pull out the win.
Jillian Deters led Neoga with 20 points while E.C. Thies tallied 16.
In Neoga's second game, the Indians claimed a 49-37 win over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
Neoga trailed 20-18 with over four minutes left in the second quarter and then went on a 14-0 run to lead 30-20 at the break. The Indians didn't let loose of the lead the rest of the way.
Deters tallied 14 for the winners while Madison Butler chipped in with 12. Thies pulled down eight rebounds.
