When a team shoots 61% from the field, you'd expect them to win. However, that's what the St. Anthony Bulldogs did Wednesday and they still came up on the short end of the stick.
Vandalia came from behind to defeat St. Anthony 70-65 in the opening game for both teams in this year's Vandalia Holiday Tournament. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.
The Bulldogs led most of the contest, ahead 18-13 after one quarter, up 37-31 at halftime, and in front 52-47 after three quarters, but the Vandals outscored St. Anthony 23-13 in the fourth quarter to post the win.
St. Anthony made 28 of 46 shots from the field including 17 of 24 attempts in the first half. The Bulldogs did not do well at the free throw line, making just eight of 14. 17 turnovers were a major problem. St. Anthony grabbed 24 rebounds and made one of just two three-point tries.
Vandalia hit half of its shots, 28 of 56 and made 11 of 15 foul shots, while turning the ball over just seven times and only twice in the second half. The Vandals pulled down 23 rebounds and made just three of 16 three-point shots.
Jacob Schuette with 22 points and John Goeckner with 21 points paced the St. Anthony attack. Alex Hoelscher was also in double figures with 10 points. Also for St. Anthony: Zach Gardewine, Jason Vogel and Andrew Gardewine with four points apiece.
St. Anthony dropped to 2-7 with the loss while Vandalia improved to 7-3 on the season.
St. Anthony plays twice at Vandalia on Thursday; at 11am vs. Maroa-Forsyth and at 3:30pm against Shelbyville. We'll have both games on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.
