WSS Advances With OT Win, Boys Regional Roundup

WINDSOR -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School advanced in its own Class 1A Boys Basketball Regional with an overtime win against Arcola, 47-46 Monday evening.
Arcola edged out to a 6-4 first quarter lead and pushed that to 21-11 at halftime. But the Hatchets mounted a comeback with a 14-9 third quarter to move within 30-25. Then it was a 15-10 final quarter to tie the score at 40-40.
In the overtime period, WSS had a 7-6 run for the victory. Arcola took a three point lead in the overtime but Christian Kessler hit a basket and was fouled. The free throw shot went off the rim but Isaac Kramer grabbed the rebound and hit a basket and was fouled. He finished out the old-fashioned three-point play and the Hatchets moved ahead 45-44.
The Purple Riders came back with a bucket to move ahead 46-45 with 22 seconds on the clock. Kessler then hit a rebound basket with two seconds and that was the game.
Christian Kessler, a 6-foot-2 senior, led Windsor/Stew-Stras with 19 points while Jackson Miller chipped in with 11.
The Hatchets improve to 13-15 on the season and will now take on Moweaqua Central A&M Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional
Marshall ended Cumberland's season in opening round play of the Casey-Westfield Regional Monday evening.
Cumberland ran off to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and it looked like the Pirates were in control. But Marshall started chipping away with an 18-12 second period to trail 33-27 at halftime. The Runnin' Lions then had a 22-10 run in the third quarter to pull ahead 49-43 and held off the Pirates in the final quarter.
Cumberland had two players in double digits. Zach Wolke, a 6-foot-3 junior, led the way with 29 points while Tyson Magee, a 6-foot-2 senior, tallied 25. Magee tied the all-time leading scorer with 1,562 points.
Marshall advances to face Teutopolis tonight at 7.

Class 1A Patoka Regional
North Clay (Louisville) moved ahead in the Class 1A Patoka Regional.
The Cardinals handed Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran a 55-52 loss. North Clay edged ahead 9-8 in the opening quarter and led 24-20 at halftime. That same margin went through the third quarter. CORL came back with an 18-17 final quarter but it was too little, too late.
Reese Blank tallied 16 points for the Cardinals while Bryce Holkenbrink and Aleon Rinehart had 10 each.
North Clay advances to a Wednesday contest against Dieterich at 6 p.m.

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional
Cisne and Hutsonville/Palestine were opening round winners in the Hutsonville Regional Monday evening.
Cisne downed Oblong, 36-23 in the first contest. Cisne advances to face Altamont at 7 p.m. today.
Hutsonville/Palestine then beat Martinsville, 55-47. Hutsonville/Palestine now faces St. Elmo/Brownstown at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Class 1A Nokomis Regional
Ramsey claimed a 60-56 win over Edinburg in the first game of the Nokomis Regional Monday.
Ramsey will now face Nokomis at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
In tonight's games, Neoga meets Niantic Sangamon Valley at 6 followed by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Buffalo Tri-City at 7:30.
Class 2A Vandalia Regional
Sullivan picked up a victory over Pana in the first game of the Vandalia Regional Monday, 54-37.
Sullivan will now face Effingham St. Anthony at 6 p.m. today followed by Shelbyville taking on Vandalia at 7:30.
