When it came right down to it, lockdown defense placed the Teutopolis Lady Shoes in the Final Four of Class 2A girls basketball Monday night.

Teutopolis was stifling on defense, holding Breese Mater Dei to two points in the first quarter and just seven points in the first half on their way to a 40-26 win over the Lady Knights. The game at Salem High School was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

With the win, Teutopolis, now 28-6, will take on Chicago Marshall Friday night at 7:15pm at Redbird Arena at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. A win would put the Lady Shoes in the 2A championship game Saturday at 7:15pm; a loss, in the third place game at 5:30pm. We will have both games on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Chicago Marshall won the Illinois Valley Community College Super-Sectional 53-48 Monday over Elgin Harvest Christian Academy.

Eureka will play Chicago Harlan in the other semifinal game at 5:30pm Friday.

Teutopolis was not a juggernaut on offense Monday, but their defense was so good that any lead looked big. The Lady Shoes led 8-2 after one quarter and 19-7 at halftime. It was 30-16 after three quarters and the Lady Shoes 10-10 standoff with Mater Dei in the final quarter sealed the victory.

Mater Dei was held to 17% shooting from the field, 7 of 42, and they missed all seven of their threes. They also struggled from the line, making just 12 of 20 attempts. Teutopolis outrebounded the Lady Knights 29 to 16. The only edge for Mater Dei was in turnovers; they only turned it over 12 times to 18 by Teutopolis.

The Shoes hit 12 of 25 shots, 48%, including 2 of 5 threes. T-Town made 14 of 22 foul shots, 64%.

Macy Michels had a monster game for Teutopolis, 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sadie Bueker scored nine points, Jolene Bueker eight points and five rebounds, Marianna Hemmen six points including 4 of 4 from the line, Morgan Mette three points and five rebounds, and Olivia Niemerg two points.

Kierra Winkeler scored 11 points to lead Mater Dei, who finished their season with a 23-8 record, losing just one senior.
