EHS Drops Contest, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School fell to Mount Vernon in a non-conference boys matchup Tuesday evening, 61-54.
The Rams edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead. Mason Hull nailed two three-pointers to keep the Hearts close. Mount Vernon held a 25-22 halftime lead.
The Hearts came back in the third quarter with a 14-11 run as Landon Wolfe broke loose for nine points and knotted the score at 36-36 going into the final period.
From there, the Rams got back on track and nailed 14 of 18 from the free throw line to pull out the win.
Wolfe tallied 29 as the lone player in double figures for the Hearts. Hull chipped in with nine.
EHS drops to 10-13 on the season.
The Hearts also fell in junior varsity action, 53-34. Wolfe led the way with 13 points for EHS.
Mount Vernon completed the sweep with a 63-42 win in freshman action. Effingham was led by Max Woelfer with 12.

At Teutopolis
Teutopolis took the early lead and never looked back in a 59-39 win over Mattoon Tuesday evening.
The Wooden Shoes stepped out to a 15-5 opening quarter lead and led 31-14 at halftime.
Three players hit the double digit plateau for the Shoes. Clint Weber led the way with 14 points while Dawson Smith and Lee Hardiek scored 10 each. Smith led the way in rebounds with 13 and assists with six.
T-town improves to 18-8 and will host Madison in Senior Night festivities Friday.
The Shoes also claimed the junior varsity contest to improve to 10-4.

Odin took the early 12-8 lead before St. Elmo/Brownstown came back to lead 23-20 at halftime. The two squads scored 13 each in the third period and Odin trailed 36-33.
The Eagles came back with a 21-19 final period but St. Elmo/Brownstown pulled out the 55-54 victory.
Lewis Brown and Isaac Maxey led the way for St. Elmo/Brownstown with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Odin was led by Caleb Jourdan with 17 and Lucas Shaffer with 11.

The Cougars ran off to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and held a 44-19 halftime tally.
Five players finished in double figures for the Cougars. Logan Lotz led the way with 17 points while Fox added 14, Roberts 10, Geiler 10 and Matheny 10.

Casey-Westfield hosted Newton and handed the Eagles a 69-54 loss in action Tuesday evening.
The Warriors ran off to a 24-11 opening quarter lead and that was the game. Richards scored 24 while Brandenburg added 16 and Livingston 14 for the winners.
Newton was led by the one-two scoring duo of Nick Cohorst and Jack Chapman with 17 each. Ben Carr chipped in with 10.
Newton drops to 5-2 in the Little Illini Conference, 18-7 overall.
Casey-Westfield finished winning the LIC regular season title with a 7-0 record and stands at 21-4 overall.

Sullivan edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening, 40-38.
The Hatchets ran off to a 12-2 opening quarter lead but Sullivan righted the ship and trailed only 19-16 at halftime. WSS then had a 12-10 third period to lead 31-26 going into the final period.
That's when Sullivan took off with a 14-7 run to pull out the two-point victory.
The Hatchets were led by Isaac Kramer with 19 points while Jackson Miller added 10. WSS dropped to 12-14 on the season.
Sullivan won the junior varsity contest, 36-18.

Cumberland handed Tri-County, 53-47 in action Tuesday.
The Pirates took a 17-12 opening quarter lead and led 28-24 at halftime. Tri-County came back with a 15-9 third quarter to take a 39-37 lead going into the final quarter. Cumberland then rallied with a 16-8 run for the victory.
Magee tallied 27 for the Pirates.
