St. Anthony, Neoga Claim Girls Basketball Wins

BROWNSTOWN -- Effingham St. Anthony pushed its National Trail Conference mark to 6-2 and its overall record to 12-16 with a 51-37 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown Thursday evening in girls high school basketball.

The Bulldogs trailed BSE 13-8 after the opening quarter and 19-17 at halftime. But the Bulldogs got untracked as Olivia Clausius scored eight points and Sydney Gibson six in the third quarter 16-6 run.

St. Anthony continued its run with an 18-12 final quarter as Meg Richards scored eight.

Richards and Clausius finished with 14 points each while Gibson tallied 12 for the Bulldogs. Clausius had a double-double with her 14 points and 13 rebounds. Gibson had three steals. Shea Kinkelaar had six assists.

"We had a real slowo first half offensively, especially getting transition points," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Then in the second half, Meg, Syd and Olivia took over in the paint. They had every field goal in the second half.

"Well, we finished the regular season strong after Christmas, going 7-3 in our last 10 games. Hopefully, that success carries over to post-season."

BSE was led by Claire Wilhour with 15 points.

St. Anthony also won the junior varsity game, 26-8.

At Dieterich

Neoga came calling in National Trail Conference play and downed host Dieterich, 55-48.

The Indians edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back to lead 26-22 at halftime.

Neoga then had an 18-8 third period that put the game away.

Blair Banning came into Thursday's contest just 15 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She finished with 27, connecting on 11 field goals, that included a three-pointer, and hit three of four at the line.

Also in double figures for the Indians was Olivia Titus with 14.

Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Cassie Vahling contributed eight points and led in rebounding with 14. Gracie Britton had two assists and four steals.

Dieterich drops to 1-6 in the conference, 8-19 overall.

Neoga improves to 12-15 on the season. The Indians also claimed the junior varsity game, 34-31.

At Centralia

Altamont picked up its fifth loss of the season against Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran. The Indians fell, 47-44.

Altamont led 11-8 aftter the opening quarter but Christ Our Rock came back to lead 21-20 at halftime then pushed that to 33-24 going into the final period.

Altamont made a comeback bid with a 20-14 run but fell short.

The Indians were led by Leah Mayhaus with 15 and Brooke Runge with 11. Altamont dropped to 22-5 on the season.

Altamont claimed the junior varsity game, 32-23.

Pana handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 66-27 non-conference loss Thursday evening.

Pana ran off to a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 26-15 at halftime. The Panthers then had a 27-6 third quarter.

CHBS was led by Jaelyn Robertson with seven points.

Pana improved to 20-7 on the season.

Wayne City led 37-12 at halftime and never looked back.

South Central was led by Sydnee Garrett with 12 points. The Cougars end regular season play with a 2-22 record.

 At Casey

It took double overtime before this Little Illini Conference contest was finished. Casey-Westfield came out with the 54-49 victory over Newton.

Casey-Westfield held a 25-15 halftime lead but Newton came back with a 29-19 second half to send the game into the first overtime period.  Each team scored two points sending the game into the second overtime where the Warriors pulled it out.

Riggleman led Casey-Westfield with 23 points while Warner added 22.

Newton was led by Abby Frohning with 15 and Taylor Smith with 11. Smith and Frohning had six rebounds each while Claire Carr had five. Frohning led in assists with four and had three steals.

Newton finishes the regular season 15-12 and 3-5 in the conference.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 35-17. The Eagles finish the JV season at 4-4 in the conference and 10-5 overall.
