Three Junior High Teams Headed to State

Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of its own Class 7-2A Boys Basketball Sectional Wednesday evening.

The Bullpups edged South Central, 34-32 to win the crown and advance to the Class 7-2A State Tournament Saturday.

St. Anthony had a 7-3 opening quarter but the score was tied at halftime, 13-13. St. Anthony then had a 10-4 third period and held off South Central in the final quarter.

The Bullpups were led by Eli Levitt with 10 points and Max Sager with nine.

South Central was led by Ethan Dunn with 12.

St. Anthony improves to 17-6 and will meet Bloomington Corpus Christi (23-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Germantown Hills Middle School. If the Bullpups win, they will advance to the 5 p.m. game against either Joliet Laraway or Stronghurst West Central.

Class 7-3A Shelbyville Sectional

Teutopolis easily handed its opponent in the Shelbyville Sectional to advance to the Class 7-3A State Tournament.

The Wooden Shoes pummeled Macon Meridian 54-11. T-town ran off to a 22-5 opening quarter lead and it was only a matter of how large the margin would be.

Ca. Siemer tallied 18 for the Shoes while B. Niebrugge chipped in with 11.

The Shoes will travel to the Class 7-3A State Tournament at Wenona Fieldcrest Saturday to face Calumet Park at 11:30 a.m. T-town is 23-2 while Calulmet Park is 18-0. If the Shoes win, they will play at 5 p.m. against either Maroa-Forysth or Glenwood Brookwood.

Class 7-1A Pana Sacred Heart Sectional

Stewardson-Strasburg came out the champion of the Pana Sacred Heart Sectional Wednesday evening.

Stew-Stras defeated Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes, 48-35. Stew-Stras edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led by that same one-point margin at halftime, 23-22. Stew-Stras then held Our Lady of Lourdes scoreless in the third period to push ahead, 34-22.

J. Wittenberg tallied 18 points for the winners while A. Wittenberg added 13. Stew-Stras improves to 22-1 on the season.

The squad will now face Lexington (16-9) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Class 7-1A State Tournament at East Peoria Central Junior High School. If Stew-Stras wins, it will take on either Lovejoy or Monmouth JCS at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Class 7-2A Findlay Okaw Valley Sectional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell in the championship game of the Assumption Central A&M Sectional Wednesday.

CHBC went down to a tough Decatur Robertson squad, 81-17. Robertson stepped out to a 44-13 halftime lead and never looked back.

CHBC was led by Kenny Robbins with six points. CHBC ends the season with a 13-10 record.
