Missed free throws sounded the death knell for Effingham High School as the Hearts dropped an Apollo Conference loss to Lincoln Tuesday evening, 42-41.
"We missed seven of our last nine free throws, including our last five," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We couldn't secure a rebound at the end and we couldn't get a three-point play to close the deal. We just have to do a better job at the end."
Lincoln edged out to a 10-7 opening quarter lead with two three-pointers by Froebe.
The Hearts came back with a 12-9 second period to tie the score at halftime 19-19. Shelby Myers nailed a basket and all four of her free throw attempts while Aly Armstrong connected on two three-pointers in the half.
Lincoln then pulled ahead 34-28 going into the final quarter. The Hearts were starting to miss from the free throw line with only three of seven.
In the final quarter, the Hearts hit seven free throws but also missed eight and couldn't come up with the big play as Lincoln won 42-41 to improve to 6-1 in the conference, 17-7 overall.
EHS was led by Carsyn Fearday with 16 points while Myers added eight. The Hearts, ranked third in Class 3A, dropped to 7-1 in the conference, 20-2 overall.
"We battled the whole game and then just didn't finish it off," said Schafer. "I thought the turning point of the game that got us back in the game was Bria Barr taking a big charge with about three mintues left. This was a tough, tough loss. I am so proud of them hanging in there two nights in a row and putting themselves in a position to win."
The Hearts are right back at it tonight with a non-conference contest at Cahokia before returning home to finish out a tough week Friday hosting Teutopolis.
