Big Second Half Leads North Clay to NTC Tourney Win

A big second half led the North Clay Cardinals to a 68-32 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on the opening night of the 83rd Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament. The game at Altamont was broadcast via both live video and audio stream on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

North Clay jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 32-20 at halftime. An 11-4 third quarter edge improved the North Clay advantage to 43-24 and the Cardinals outscored the Bobcats 25-8 in the fourth quarter to win by 36.

North Clay shot 49% from the field, 24 of 49 including 4 of 16 threes. The Cardinals made 16 of 24 foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times and grabbed 41 rebounds.

CHBC couldn't get anything to drop, going 9 of 51 from the field including missing all eight threes they attempted. They also made just 14 of 25 free throws. The Bobcats pulled down 28 rebounds and committed 14 turnovers.

That's a total of 100 shots attempted in the game as well as 49 free throws.

North Clay had four double figure scorers. Bryce Holkenbrink led the way with 16 points, while Kaden Turner scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Aleon Rinehart and Quincy Aldrich each scored 11 points. Also for the Cardinals: Reese Blank 6, Ian Bailey 5, Blake Noll 2 and Nick Miller 2.

Eddie Clearwater led CHBC with 6 points. Also for the Bobcats: Keegan Martin 5, Nick Miller 5, Dylan Taylor 5, Dylan Webster 4, Trace Smith 3, Marshall Nohren 2, and Ditton Curl 2.

North Clay advances to the first game Tuesday night, when they will take on top-seeded St. Anthony. CHBC will play in the 5pm Thursday game against the second game loser from Wednesday night.

North Clay improved to 7-12 on the season and claimed the first NTC Tournament win in school history. CHBC is now 3-14.

Tuesday, it'll again be St. Anthony vs. North Clay at 6:15pm, followed by a battle of the Indians, Altamont vs. Neoga. We will have both games via live video and audio streaming on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com
