STRASBURG -- Newton St. Thomas and Dieterich were area winners at the Class 7-1A Stewardson-Strasburg Boys Basketball Regional Saturday.

St. Thomas opened with 44-34 victory over Effingham Sacred Heart. St. Thomas had a 29-12 second and third period run.

K. Bergbower led the way with 12 points for the winners. Wiedman led Sacred Heart with 19.

In the second contest, Dieterich downed Sigel St. Michael, 33-19.

Dieterich ripped off to a 13-5 opening quarter lead and that was the game. Britton tallied 18 for the winners.

Niebrugge led St. Michael with eight.

In the third contest, Mattoon St. John's defeated Martinsville, 34-23.

Tonight's games feature Stewardson-Strasburg against Newton St. Thomas at 6 followed by Dieterich taking on Mattoon St. John's at 7:15.

Class 1A Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes Regional

Three games were contested at this regional Saturday.

Decatur Holy Family downed Decatur Garfield Montessori, 45-22 while Our Lady of Lourdes pounded Bement, 51-9. In the final game, Decatur Lutheran downed Windsor, 50-14.

Tonight's games feature Pana Sacred Heart against Decatur Holy Family at 6 followed by Our Lady of Lourdes against Decatur Lutheran at 7:15.

 

Class 7-2A Findlay Okaw Valley

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened the evening in the Findlay Okaw Valley Regional with a 34-25 win over Ramsey.

CHBC trailed Ramsey 8-6 after the opening quarter and the score was tied at halftime, 14-14. CHBC then had a 20-11 second half run to pull out the win.

CHBC was led by Kenny Robbins with 14 points.

Nokomis then defeated Findlay Okaw Valley, 33-9 while Morrison won over Pawneem 41-32.

Tonight's contests feature CHBC against Assumption Central A&M at 5:30 followed by Nokomis taking on Morrisonville at 6:45.

Class 7-3A Marshall Regional

Lawrenceville Parkview ended Jasper County's stay in the Marshall Regional by a 27-23 count Saturday.

In other games, Casey-Westfield beat Red Hill (Bridgeport), 38-12 and Marshall beat Robinson Nuttall, 37-33.

Tonight's games have Teutopolis taking on Lawrenceville Parkview at 6 followed by Casey-Westfield against Marshall, at 7:15.

 

Class 3-A Sullivan Regional

Macon Meridian won the opening game at the Class 3-A Sullivan Regional by downing Paris  Mayo, 50-40.

In the second contest, Arcola won over Sullivan, 37-16.

The final game went to Arthur over Shelbyville Moulton, 34-23.

Tonight's games feature Cumberland against Macon Merdician at 6 and Arcola facing Arthur at 7:15.

 

Class 7-4A Taylorville Regional

Mount Zion downed Taylorville 31-23 in the Class 7-4A Taylorville Regional.

Mattoon trounced Clinton, 51-11 and Decatur Jefferson won over Stephen Decatur, 31-26.

Tonight's games feature Effingham against Mount Zion at 6 followed by Mattoon taking on Decatur Jefferson at 7:15.

 

James Burke Memorial Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony claimed the consolation championship of the 70th Annual James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Tournament Friday.

The Bullpups defeated Triad, 37-18. St. Anthony edged out to a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 19-10 at halftime. The Bullups held a 25-15 lead going into the final quarter then had a 12-3 run.

Blanchette scored 11 for the winners who improve to 12-9 on the season.

At Carlyle

Altamont Lutheran's eighth-grade squad handed Carlyle a loss in action Friday evening, 49-38.

In the seventh-grade game, Carlyle was a 46-22 winner.
