BRIDGEPORT -- Newton High School fell to Marshall in opening round play of the Little Illini Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday, 61-53.
Marshall took an 11-9 opening quarter lead but Newton came back to lead 23-18 at halftime. The Runnin' Lions then had an 18-7 third period and held off the Eagles in the final quarter.
Zach Jansen tallied 23 points to lead Newton while Tucker Rieman chipped in with nine.
The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday in consolation bracket play against Lawrenceville at 7:30 p.m.
In a Friday contest, Lawrenceville downed Paris 65-50. In other Saturday games, Casey-Westfield beat Lawrenceville 73-48, Robinson won over Red Hill (Bridgeport) 69-55 and Flora beat Olney 59-54.

At Altamont
Altamont put together a 27-8 opening quarter run and that was the game in an 88-39 stomping of Patoka in a non-conference contest Saturday.
Four players hit double digits. Mitchell Stevenson led the way with 34 points, all in the first three quarters. He scored 16 in the opening period, nine in the second and third periods.
Alek Biggs added 17 while Noah Teasley scored 13 and Aiden Jahraus 10.
The Indians won the junior varsity contest, 60-45.
Altamont then traveled to North Clay (Louisville) and captured an 82-60 National Trail Conference victory Saturday.
The Indians broke a 15-15 deadline after the opening quarter to take a 40-23 halftime lead.
Stevenson scored 32 points as he connected on 11 field goals, including five three-pointers and was five of six at the line. Also in double figures were Biggs with 15, Jahraus with 13 and Teasley with 10.
North Clay won the junior varsity contesmt 43-40.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City downed South Central in a National Trail Conference contest Friday, 71-60.
The Bobcats held a 32-16 halftime lead and never looked back.
Dylan Webster scored 20 for the winners while Nick Miller chipped in with 16, Marshall Nohren 11 and Keegan Martin 10.
South Central was led by Trent Geiler and Hunter Brandt with 12 each while Ean Fox added 10.

Mulberry Grove came calling and handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 65-60 Egyptian-Illini Conference loss Friday, 65-60.
The Aces took a 22-12 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a 14-9 second period to trail 31-28 at halftime. Mulberry Grove then got back on course with a 22-13 third period but once again here came BSE with a 21-12 final period to make things exciting.
Lewis Brown led SEB with 29 points while Isaac Maxey added 14 and Andy Goldsborough 11.
