Altamont, Newton, Cumberland Nab Boys Cage Wins

COWDEN -- Altamont High School came calling and downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference boys basketball action Tuesday.

CHBC took a 15-13 opening quarter lead but the Indians came roaring back with a 20-7 second period and put the game in the win column. In that second quarter run, Alek Biggs nailed two three-pointers and scored 12 points to rally the Indians.

The Indians were led by Biggs, a 5-foot-9 junior, with 29 points. He hit 11 field goals, six of those from three-point range, and a free throw. Mitchell Stevenson, a 5-foot-10 senior, tallied 23 points. He connected on nine field goals, including one three-pointer, and was four of four at the line. Also in double figures was Denver Duckwitz with 15, nine coming in the final quarter.

Altamont scored 28 field goals and 10 of those came from three-point range. The Indians were also 10 of 12 at the line.

CHBC was led by Dylan Webster with 19 points and Keegan Martin with 15. Martin led in rebounds with six while Nick Miller had five. Marshall Nohren had four assists and three steals.

Altamont's junior varsity also claimed the win 54-39.

At Newton

Newton trailed Flora 26-19 at halftime and 37-28 going into the final quarter. That's when the Eagles came to life.

Jack Chapman connected on three trifectas and hit a free throw for 10 points in the period. Zach Jansen hit a basket and was four of four at the line for six points while Collin Harris added five points. The Eagles had a 27-14 run to pull out the four-point win.

Chapman finished with 17 points while Harris added 13. Two other players hit double digits with 10 each, Nick Cohorst and Zach Jansen.

Newton improves to 3-1 in the Little Illini Conference and 14-4 overall.

At Toledo

Cumberland pummeled Arcola 55-37 in action Tuesday evening.

The Pirates ran off to a 20-10 opening quarter lead and led 28-14 at halftime. The lead went to 44-26 going into the final quarter.

Tyson Magee scored eight points in the opening quarter and finished with 20 for the contest. Also in double figures for the Pirates were Zach Wolke with 15 and Brennyn Cutts with 12.
