GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony lost opening round games at the 70th Annual James Burke Memorial Junior High Boys Basketball Tournament Monday.

St. Anthony dropped the opening game to Hillsboro, 39-31.

Hillsboro took a 5-4 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony came back to lead 16-12 at halftime.

The Bullpups trailed 27-26 going into the final quarter when Hillsboro broke away with a 12-5 run.

Stewart led St. Anthony with 10 points.

Aviston trounced Roxana 37-7 in the second contest.

Effingham fell in the third game against Greenville 41-16. The Mustangs led 4-3 after the first quarter but Greenville came roaring back with a 16-6 second period and had a 20-6 second half.

The Mustangs were led by Volpi with five points.

In the final game, Salem downed Triad 43-28.

St. Anthony will meet the loser of the Aviston vs. Roxana contest at 6 p.m. today while Effingham will take on the loser of the  Salem vs. Triad contest at 7.

National Trail Conference Tournament

Two games were contested Monday at the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament at St. Elmo.

Sigel St. Michael defeated South Central, 60-32.

In the second game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City defeated Effingham Sacred Heart, 41-24.

CHBC held a 22-12 halftime lead. Daniel Lucas scored 16 while Silas Buzzard added 14 for the winners.

Sacred Heart was led by Tyler Feldhake with nine.

The tournament continues today with Stewardson-Strasburg taking on Neoga at 6:15 p.m. followed by North Clay (Louisville) facing Dieterich at 7:30.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis handed visiting Monticello two losses Monday evening.

T-town won the seventh-grade game, 37-13. T-town leaped out to an 11-2 opening quarter and held Monticello scoreless in the second period to lead 21-2 at halftime.

Brendan Niebrugge scored 15 for the Shoes.

In eighth-grade play, T-town won, 51-40.  Monticello led 16-8 after the opening quarter and 24-15 at halftime. The Shoes came roaring back in the third quarter with a 22-7 run and finished by outscoring Monticello 14-9 in the final period.

Kaleb Bannicked scored 21 and Sam Bushur added 18 for the Shoes.
