Mahomet-Seymour Downs Hearts in Apollo Action

Mahomet-Seymour came from behind to defeat Effingham 68-56 in Apollo Conference boys basketball action Friday night. The game at Mahomet was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The Hearts made 7 of 12 shots in the first quarter and led 17-12 at the end of the period.

The lead grew to 10 in the second quarter, but Mahomet-Seymour was able to pare the advantage to six and then pulled within two by halftime, trailing the Hearts 28-26 at intermission.

The Bulldogs continued to take control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Hearts 42-28 after the break to win by 12. Mahomet-Seymour was continually able to take advantage of Hearts' turnovers and cash in on the offensive end. Effingham committed 14 turnovers in the contest, to just eight for the Bulldogs.

Both teams shot the ball well. Effingham made 24 of 46 shots for 52% including 4 of 15 threes. The Hearts took just four foul shots, but made them all. Mahomet-Seymour made 29 of 50 shots for 58% including 2 of 11 threes. The Bulldogs made 8 of 9 free throws. The Hearts out rebounded the Bulldogs 23-22.

Landon Wolfe again was the leading scorer for Effingham, scoring 34 points on 13 of 20 shooting. He was the only Hearts player to go to the foul line and grabbed six rebounds. The output leaves Wolfe one point shy of 1,000 for his career. Cole Marxman went 5 for 6 from the field to total 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Mason Hull scored six points on 3 of 8 shooting with four rebounds. Matt Robinson totaled six points on 3 of 5 shooting with five rebounds. Ryan Sandifer and Logan Smith each grabbed a rebound.

Cory Noe led Mahomet-Seymour with 26 points, while Noah Benedict scored 18 points, 14 in the second half, and Holt Campion added 14 points. Josh Johnson scored the other eight points.

Mahomet-Seymour, still undefeated in the Apollo Conference, improved to 14-4 on the season. The Hearts slipped back below .500 at 8-9. Effingham is back in action Wednesday at 6:30pm in the opening game of the Salem Invitational Tournament, taking on Centralia.

Mahomet-Seymour won the JV game 64-54. Parker Wolfe led the JV Hearts with 23 points, while Nate Thompson scored 8 points.
