The Effingham Hearts posted a 50-40 win Monday night at EHS Gym over the Mt. Zion Braves in girls high school basketball action.
The Hearts took a 13-7 opening quarter lead and led 29-21 at halftime. Mount Zion attempted a comeback with a 12-9 third period run to pull within 38-33 but Effingham pulled together in the final quarter for the victory.
"This was a hard-fought win for us," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Mount Zion, to their credit, would not go away. To our kids' credit, they kept making plays and pulled it out.
"Josie Zerrusen was great for us with a double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds. She played great on the defensive end as well. Everybody else just chipped in here and there to help us win."
The Hearts also had eight points from Caitlin Kaufman and seven points from Jantzen Michael. Effingham is now 3-0 in the Apollo Conference and 6-3 overall. The Hearts are back in action Thursday night in Paris, a game that will be on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.
