EHS Girls Open With Victory

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School opened play at the Charleston Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament with a victory over Tri-County, 64-37 Wednesday.

The Hearts edged out to a 19-13 opening quarter lead then had a 23-11 second period run to lead 42-24 at halftime.

Three players hit double digits for the Hearts. Carsyn Fearday tallied 17 points and had four rebounds. She hit three field goals and was 11 of 12 at the line. Skyler Schafer and Natalie Carie scored 10 points each. Carie had four rebounds and five assists. Schafer had three rebounds.

Miranda Fox chipped in with eight points and had three assists. Abby Weis had three assists and three steals.

"We played a really nice two middle quarters to pull away from a very good Tri-County team," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Our bench was huge today as we got 29 points from Skyler, Natalie, Abby and Madison. Carsyn had another really good all-around game as did Miranda as they both played around first half foul trouble. We have a really tough matchup with Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin in the morning."

In other scores, Tri-County beat Champaign Centennial 58-20, Danville defeated Sacred Heart 59-51, Pekin downed Rantoul 51-36, Charleston won over Urbana 67-37, Sacred Heart downed Champaign Centennial 53-39, Paris defeated Rantoul 52-33 and Charleston won over Pekin 71-42.

The Hearts will be back in action today at 10:30 a.m. against Sacred Heart then taking on Champaign Centennial at 4:30.
