Cumberland, Newton Claim Boys Cage Victories

TOLEDO -- Cumberland High School trailed Altamont early in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday evening. But, the Pirates moved a point ahead before halftime and went on to take a 52-42 win.
Altamont stepped out to a 12-8 early lead as Alek Biggs knocked in two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight points. But the Pirates had a 15-10 second period to move ahead 23-22 at halftime. Zach Wolke went on a tear, scoring three baskets and two free throws for nine points.
Cumberland continued the attack in the second half with a 14-9 third quarter and a 15-11 final period.
Tyson Magee led the Pirates with 19 points while Wolke finished with 14 and Brennyn Cutts was on the fringe of double figures with nine. The Pirates are now 7-4 on the season.
Biggs scored 13 to lead the Indians while Aiden Jahraus chipped in with 12 and Mitchelll Stevenson had nine.
Altamont dropped to 4-4 on the season.
Altamont won the junior varsity contest 53-27.

At Newton
Newton took the early lead then held off Charleston for a 65-55 non-conference victory Tuesday.
The Eagles stepped out to a 23-12 opening quarter lead. Ben Carr nailed two three-pointers while Nick Cohorst scored eight points.
Newton continued with a 13-11 second period to lead 36-23 at halftime.
The Eagles continued their hold with a 15-12 third quarter. Charleston had a 20-14 final period.
Newton had four players connect for double digits. Cohorst tallied 19 points while Jack Chapman added 14, Zach Jansen 12 and Collin Harris 11. the only other Eagle to score was Carr with eight.

Okaw Valley had a one point lead at halftime over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and went on for a 43-36 non-conference victory.
Okaw Valley had a slight 11-10 third period then finished out strong with a 17-12 final quarter.
Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Chase Thies with 12 points and Isaac Kramer with 10. The Hatchets drop to 5-3 on the season while Okaw Valley improved to 2-6.
Windsor/Stew-Stras took the junior varsity contest 54-48.
