EHS Edges Charleston, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School edged Charleston 76-63 in boys Apollo Conference basketball action Friday.

The Trojans took a 25-23 opening quarter lead despite the big scoring of Effingham's Landon Wolfe who hit two three-pointers and had three regular baskets for 12 points. Mason Hull added seven.

The Hearts trailed 44-37 at halftime as Charleston had a 19-14 second period edge.

But here came Effingham. Wolfe went on another tear for 10 points and the Hearts had a 22-15 third quarter to tie the score at 59-59. Wolfe then put in 12 points in the fourth period and the Hearts pulled out a 17-14 final quarter to take the three-point win.

Wolfe, a 6-foot-5 junior, finished with a game-high 39 points. He hit 15 field goals that included three trifectas and was six of seven at the line. Hull finished with 15 and Ryan Sandifer was on the verge of double figures with nine points.

Charleston edged the Hearts 61-58 in junior varsity action.

At Newton

Newton captured a 76-68 victory over Robinson Friday.

The Eagles trailed Robinson 16-10 after the opening quarter and 30-27 at halftime. Newton broke loose with a 25-10 third period to lead 52-40 going into the final quarter.

Robinson came back with a 21-9 fourth period to tie the score at 61-61, sending the game into overtime. In the OT period, Newton pulled out the 76-68 win with a 15-7 run.

Newton finished with four players in double figures. Collin Harris led the way with 24 points, 12 of those coming in the third quarter run. Nick Cohorst tallied 18, Carr 14 and Jansen 12.

At Centralia

South Central picked up a non-conference win over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Friday, 62-45.

The Cougars held a 25-20 halftime lead then had an 18-8 third quarter that put the game away.

Logan Lotz, a 5-foot-8 junior, scored 19 to lead South Central. Also in double figures was Trent Geiler, a 5-foot-10 senior, with 15.

 St. Elmo/Brownstown Tournament

In Friday action, St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Vandalia 57-52 in winner bracket play while Ramsey downed Patoka 71-58 in consolation bracket action.

SEB trailed Vandalia 16-15 after the first quarter and 23-22 at halftime. Vandalia moved ahead 38-34 in the third quarter.

But SEB came back with a 23-14 final period to take the victory. Rocky Himes led the way with four baskets for eight points while Lewis Brown put together six points in the quarter and Isaac Maxey added a three-pointer and two free throws.

Maxey finished with 22 points to lead the winners while Brown added 12 and Himes 10.

That moved SEB into the championship game against Cumberland Saturday.

Wayne City Holiday Tournament

Two games were contested Friday at the Wayne City Holiday Tournament.

North Clay (Louisville) downed Cisne 56-49 in two overtimes in the opening game.

Wayne City then defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport) 48-41 in overtime.

Saturday's games will feature Cisne against Grayville for seventh place at 10 a.m., Crab Orchard taking on North Clay for fifth place at 11:30, Gallatin County facing Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 1 for third place and the championship at 2:30 featuring Webber Township (Bluford) against Wayne City.
